Had a brief problem with my M8 tonight... (uh oh)

Amy, please don't feel alone in this.

It happened to me too.

Recently, I was shooting a street performer on stilts.

He posed for me a few seconds, then he just turned away, smiling under his make-up.

Beautiful texture of black in the picture, though.

I wonder at which critical moment I'll forget it again. Ah well...

It is a shame that Leica did not carry over the feature from the M6 where when the lens cap was left on you got a blinking red light to warn you to remove the cap. Should not be difficult to implement in the more electronic M8 in my opinion. I know I know, we are all supposed to be thinking machines, but when you are out and about and changing lenses etc, it is easy to make such a mistake. So give me the blinking light and I will readily admit to being a flawed humanoid!

I find it unbelievable that Leica produces such an expensive camera that allows the user to take a photograph with the lenscap on:mad: . Any simple P&S has a simple construction making that impossible. No DSLR allows this! I will sell my M8's:mad:

Woody, the M8 starts flashing a triangle in the display with the cap on...Just like the M6.

The M8 does flash the meter/exposure LED's when there is not enough light to use the longest exposure for A mode, 32 seconds. And just checked mine with it set to 1/2 second and with the lens cap on there is a flashing arrow.

All you have to do is get use to looking at the meter LED's before you shot.

Personally most of the time I take the lens cap off when I take the camera out of the bag and if for some reason I put it back on when it is out of the bag I have gotten in the habit of looking at the meter LED's.

You are entirely correct, Jaap. I will help you with your problem and send you $100 as soon as you send me the junk camera of which you complain.

Yes, it is an obvious design flaw that makes the camera unusable for serious use. I have started a foundation which will take in any orphaned M8's. Just PM me. I will pick them up anywhere in the world. The owner will only be asked for a contribution towards my airline and hotel costs.

Amy, there's one more newbie rangefinder mistake to make (unless I'm the ONLY one)...couldn't figure why occasionally I had trouble focusing only to realize my finger partially covered the focusing window. Never use lens caps or else I'm sure I would have done the same thing a number of times.

Amy,

Yep, been there, done that!

Hopefully Leica's next software upgrade will contain a feature that automatically removes the lenscap whan the shutter button is depressed.:D

-->Larry "Sudden Lenscap Syndrome" ROFL.

Pete.

I think it would be fine if Leica did what they had for the M6 which is to have a blinking red light in the finder if the cap is on. This has saved me many a lost piece of Velvia.

Great to hear. Hopefully the rangefinder on the black body is fixed or perhaps the second body is still in Solms. In any event, it will be great to have the first body now modified and the lenses with appropriate lubricant in the focus ring. I am desperate to get the gear back in my hands.

Thanks again for all your help during the trip. You are a wonderful man and I hope we always stay in touch

But there is a blinking red light. The number 3, a right pointing triangle and the number 2. Meaning more than 32 seconds. And it is blinking!

I just miss it sometimes. And it seems I am not the only one. Ugh.:D

HAHAHAHAHAHA - that may just be it... I don't know for sure since I can't remember, but it's highly possible - and probable (coming from a dSLR I'm not used to being able to see anything if you don't take the lens cap off!)

LOL HAHAHAH!

Thanks ! ! !! :)

You made my night by reminding me of the very same thing that happened to me when I started shooting the M8 after shooting with the Olympus E1 for years. The laughter I just experienced was about myself and the similarity we all have to each other in some very human ways.

Enjoy the experience of YOUR M8.
