john_j Posted May 24, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 24, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Greetings- It has been several years since I was on this forum and today thought I'd check out the latest down-low. To my surprise, I learned about the sensor replacement and its forth coming deadline. I have had this corrosion issue for a while but but thought it was just dust/oil. I was mostly able to solve it by correction in Capture I, Lightroom or Photoshop. I did from time to time clean the sensor but never thought is was a defect; just my cleaning skills. I took a sky shot at f/16 (as advised on another thread); it matched the others for corrosion and called Leica, NJ. Fortunately, I live less than an hour from Allendale and was going that way today. It's now in their hands and I received a follow-up email. I did ask about turn-around and there was some hesitation but it could be as long as two months. So for now back to the M-6's and my darkroom. I need to visit here more often. I really appreciate this site and all of the contributions folks make. It certainly saved my butt today! BTW, my M9 was purchased new in September 2010; I never registered it but had the receipt from BCC in Westwood, NJ. It had the number 5 sensor. john_j Posted June 7, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted June 7, 2017 Had an email from Leica today verifying the sensor cover glass was seperating and the camera would be cleaned, lubed and adjusted as well. I followed up with a call and the turn around time will be approximately 14 weeks. Glad I made the deadline!
Graham (G4FUJ) Posted June 8, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 8, 2017 I presume not all M9 sensors are affected? Just in case I ever buy an M9 - should I specifically look for one where the sensor has been replaced?
jaapv Posted June 8, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 8, 2017 Yes - and by the later type of corrosion-proof sensor. Or one that is priced to allow for a replacement if needed.

AlanT Posted June 17, 2017 Share #7 Posted June 17, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) FYI I just received my M-E back from New Jersey with a new sensor. I went though Leica Store Boston who were very helpful and wonderful to work with. I dropped it off to them on March 13th so it took just about 12 weeks. it's raining right now so it will be a little longer before I can go out and see the results of the new sensor but I'm very happy to have it back home. Thanks
Westino Posted June 26, 2017 Share #8 Posted June 26, 2017 I bought a leica m9 in February 2017 with a sensor certificate replaced on January 2017, can I be sure the new sensors are actually free from the problem? It happened that sensors replaced after August 2015 have re-reported the same problem, thank you?
jaapv Posted June 26, 2017 Share #9 Posted June 26, 2017 The new corrosion-proof sensor is supposed to be, errr.. corrosion-proof. I have not heard of any evidence to the contrary.
jpattison Posted June 26, 2017 Share #10 Posted June 26, 2017 Yes - and by the later type of corrosion-proof sensor. Is there an approximate "start date" for when this newer type sensor began being used ? John

Westino Posted June 26, 2017 Share #12 Posted June 26, 2017 I think, also reading the official communications, from August 30, 2015 is it ok?
