Summilux 35 Canada preasph on M8 : focussing problems beyond 5 mt.

The problem is with the Summilux 35 Canada preasph ( sn. 2.870.XXX ) when used on M8 beyond 5/6 mt. The Lens is protected in the back side by a protection ring like the first Summilux 35 serie and is absolutely impossible to focussing beyond 5/6 mt to infinite (the same problem like the Voigtlander-Cosina Nocton 35 1:1,2).

It is not a big problem during the focussing operation because when the focussing helicoidal moves with difficulty is just sufficient to stop but the problem it is very important if the lens comes mounted on the M8 bayonet when it is already on infinite.

Mounting the lens already to infinite existe serious risk of damaging of the M8 internal body and Leica has not comprised this lens between those not usable on M8 camera.

I think absolutely necessary to communicate the problem.

Thanks for your attention

But all M8 users (and Leica mainly) are not interested to this large problem?

I don't understand why Leica don't publish immediately an official press release in order to inform about its incredible forgetfulness...

The Summilux 35 preaspherical is not a Thambar or a Hektor 50, is a lens very diffusing between the Leica M users and I believe most important to inform about the error.

However I have informed immediately, now all the responsibilities they fall back alone only on Leica.

My best regards

Hi Roberto,

Though I do not have an pre-asph 35Lux, really thanks for your great observation as I'm trying out different vintage lens regularly at our shops here. I believe Leica should bring oit an announcement upon this post.

You might want to read my eariler thread. I've been able to get my lens to work. As far as serious damage, I'd say rather not. It's only the bottom bit of the opening where the (TTL?) meter is. That piece is a bit too big and is causing the problem, but it's not as sensitive of an area as, for instnace, the shutter. Mine has a very small nick in the plastic there now but it causes no problems. A bigger problem might be with my collapsible f3.5 red scale Elmar. It actually collapses! But I'm worried it might be resting against the shutter and if I accedentially fired the shutter with it collapsed that it might rip or tear the shutter -- now that's would be a much more serious problem. What Leica should do fo the pre-asph Lux is to offer an upgrade path or repair service as I suggest in the one thread...

I have been using the titainium version of the 35 pre-asph 'Lux, and have had no fucusing problems at all. Just looked at mine which was bought new, NOS, 3 years ago, and the collar is cut out at the factory, so evidently this was changed at some time during the production life of the lens.

Sure, but like as Leica has informed "Elmarit 28/2,8 under sn 2.314.921" I believe that he would be corrected to write also "Summilux 35 from sn XXXX to sn XXXX".

Using the old Elmarit 28 the M8 just don't read correctly the exposure but using this Summilux 35 version the M8 internal body may be damaged...

Bye

  • 1 month later...

I acquired a Summilux 35mm Type I Canadian Silver Chrome just in late June. It is E41 instead of the later E39. Smooth focusing from 1m to infinity, and it has become one of my best favourite glass on M8. Cheers.

I´m bumping this since I love my pre-ASPH lux and am in the market for an M8.

Any other M8/pre-ASPH lux experiences?

Thanks.

Which pre-Asph Lux -- the 50 or the 35? I use both and love both on the M8, so I guess it really doesn't matter :D But I did post some 35 Pre-Lux examples in the thread Carsten mentioned above -- http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/29964-35-lux-asph-vs-35-cron.html

I think you should take a look at my post where I filed down mine to get it to fit the body. I have images of the lens before and after, etc... The point is the damage to the body would only be on the areas I circle in the post. I'm not sure the M8 even needs these "wings"... Anyway my 35mm Lux is focusing out to inf now. Only question I have remaining: is the reason some can focus to inf without filing is because they are the ones that only close focus to 1 meter? Mine focuses down to .9 meters and the extra .1 meter really helps indoors.

Hi Russel, thanks for the link.

Mine is Canadian, serial number 3281473. Does your lens have a 0.9 meter marking? Mine has markings down to 1m but it is possible to turn the focusing ring a bit more, I guess to 0.9m.

Best,

Gunnar

My 35 Pre-Lux is marked down to 1 meter and focuses a bit closer. However I can't see how one that focused CLOSER would have any issues, because the shroud is only getting further away from the problem area at close focus... Mine IS a tad sticky the last 1.5mm of focus ring throw -- from say half way between the 10M mark and infinity to infinity. Since I rarely need to focus that lens at infinity, it isn't a huge issue for me. The solution is to lop a bit off the end of that ring.
