geetee1972 Posted May 14, 2017 Share #1 Â Posted May 14, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I got caught in a heavy shower this morning with my SL. Now the sensor has gone black and the camera doesn't shoot. It turns on and momentarily registers and displays a view but then everything goes black. The display info still shows so I know the camera is still operating so it looks like it's just the sensor. Â Is this just a coincidence or does it would like moisture shorting out the sensor? I thought the SL was supposed to be weather sealed? Â Â Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Advertisement Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Hi geetee1972, Take a look here Sensor has gone black?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted May 14, 2017 Share #2 Â Posted May 14, 2017 If this is what I fear, it seems to me to be the end of this camera, unless you have been very lucky. It sounds like water has gotten behind the sensor cover glass and possibly inside the camera too. Although the camera has been weather-proofed, it is not watertight, and the lens mount has no effective seal at all AFAIK, providing a point of entry. Get it to Leica ASAP. geetee1972 Posted May 14, 2017 Author Share #3 Â Posted May 14, 2017 I've just got that horrible sick feeling in my stomach reading that post [emoji30] Â The sensor is working very intermittently. It works when you turn it on and I've even been able to take a picture with it. Â Â Â Â Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
jaapv Posted May 14, 2017 Share #4  Posted May 14, 2017 I can quite imagine and I sincerely hope that I am horribly wrong. However, if it is water damage, you can claim it on your insurance, which will probably result in a battle between Leica and the insurance company about the semantics of weatherproofed, which should not affect you.  Even if it fires up again, have it checked out by Leica immediately. Corrosion is progressive. Take the battery out and send it to Leica. If it is water damage, the longer the battery is in, the worse the damage gets.
geetee1972 Posted May 14, 2017 Author Share #5 Â Posted May 14, 2017 OK it seems to be working just fine now but still.... Â The semantics are not remotely ambiguous. If it's weather sealed, getting caught in a shower should categorically not result in such a problem. It would be far better to simply not advertise it as such. LocalHero1953 Posted May 14, 2017 Share #7 Â Posted May 14, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have had mine out in the heavy rain without problems - with the SL lenses. Others (including Jono Slack) have done the same. There was one early example of the system getting inundated in the sea next to a boat. M and other third party lenses wouldn't have the same seal at the mount. Â If you were using a SL lens, this is worth taking up with Leica. They have made a big play about the SL's weatherproofing, and I don't think they expect problems with heavy rain. Â Even if you were using a non-SL lens, I think this is worth taking to Leica. FWIW they have just recalibrated my 3 year old M240 for free without me asking. Not everything Leica does has to cost a lot.
vladik Posted May 14, 2017 Share #8 Â Posted May 14, 2017 I would remove the battery and the lens, let it dry out, by switching it on it might caused more damage if not already.
geetee1972 Posted May 14, 2017 Author Share #9 Â Posted May 14, 2017 It was an M mount lens with a Leica adapter, which I would suppose has a gasket to seal it. As I said, it seems to be working fine now.

No, only SL lenses are considered 'weather sealed' there is no gasket on the adapter to seal it
geetee1972 Posted May 14, 2017 Author Share #11 Â Posted May 14, 2017 So it would seem - then it's not a weather sealed camera so much as a weather sealed body. It would be nice if they could make that clear when they advertise it. I specifically asked the dealer about whether the weather sealing also applied when using M lenses and he assured me it would be fine. Lesson learned I guess. rafikiphoto Posted May 14, 2017 Share #14 Â Posted May 14, 2017 Not everything Leica does has to cost a lot. Â Very true. Recently Leica had UPS collect my wife's 14-year-old Trinovid binoculars couriered them to Portugal, cleaned and adjusted them, couriered them back to her in Spain for no charge. Same for mine a couple of years ago.

Leica has stated in an interview with Mr. Daniel (regarding the M240) that Leica M lenses are "sufficiently weathersealed on account of the narrow tolerances and greases". geetee1972 Posted May 14, 2017 Author Share #18 Â Posted May 14, 2017 Send it in anyway to check!! A sensible suggestion but one that fills me with the dread of not seeing my camera again for the rest of the summer. What can I expect about how long it will be away for? TheGodParticle/Hari Posted May 14, 2017 Share #19 Â Posted May 14, 2017 Â Â Â And it just keeps shooting. Â I've walked for hours in rain/snow with the SL hanging off of my shoulder and had no issues, with the 24-90 zoom. Â With M lenses I am cautious though. dancook Posted May 14, 2017 Share #20  Posted May 14, 2017 https://uk.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-SL/Details  The use of numerous seals in the camera body, its control elements, and the Leica SL-Lenses makes it virtually impossible for dust, moisture, or water to get inside.
