Pre-coded lens on M-D

I have several Leica lenses made in the pre-coded days. 21mm to 50mm range. 

What will be the result of using them on the M-D where you cannot manually set the lens type?

Should I use as is or have them updated at Leica?

What is the charge for having them coded?

Hm - honestly, I think you have to expect an uncoded behaviour, just like with any other camera with that very same sensor. That behaviour very much depends on the lens. Lenses 35mm and longer do not tend to have issues, really, regarding color shift. Vignette can easily be removed in post processing. I hardly do.

 

I do have a 70 year old 35 Elmar, a 50 Summicron from '61 or so, and an older Elmarit 2.8/90 (the longer version). None is coded. No issues. Unrelated to coding, the 3.5/35 looks particularly good on the black M-D. The other two chrome ones not so, to my eye. So the 35mm gets the most use on the M-D.

 

Will van Manen just coded my Voigtlander 1.1/50 for something like 85 Euros, if I remember correctly. That was during a revision of the lens, though. Leica used to charge a little less than 200 Alpendollars in the good old M8 days, but  that may well have changed.

I ordered a couple of the chinese flanges to try out, one for the 21 mm and one for the 28mm. Will let you know how it goes.

I have undone all the 'painted on' coding that I applied to uncoded Leica glass - and never looked back.  Reason is that I prefer not to have any black-box things happen to the image after it hits the sensor, and also because old Leica lenses all unique personalities.  That is why I use older glass.  The only lens where I do make corrections is the SA21, and there with Cornerfix for  the magenta edge before importing to LR.  I started this with the M-P and it seems to make even more sense with the M-D.  We often tend to overthink all this stuff that is possible but not essential.  And that comes at a cost to creativity and spontaneity.  I find that the less I worry about this stuff the more I enjoy this amazing tool called digital M.

They came super fast from China...very impressed...will let you know how mounting on the 21mm and 28mm goes.

Nothing prevents us from comparing the results between coded in-camera results from uncoded lenses.

Now, I also have a 28mm Summicron ASPH. I bought a flange for it too, but does the 28mm benefit from having the coding as much as the 21mm?
