My Digilux 2 has been with Leica US now for almost 3 months, a call 3 weeks ago was told there was a back order of the image sensor.

Got a letter today from Leica explaining about the shortage of the sensors and that the backlog could exceed 3 months. They are now offering a "Digilux 3 Upgrade Program" for Digilux 2 users who has sent their cameras in for repair. The offer

$950 - If all original content of the box is intact

$1075 - If the original content of the box is not available

I am thinking about jumping at the oppurtunity, but would like to know if it is a wise choice.

Bohghee,

Seriously you got me thinking.

The lens cost $949.95 @ BH

That's a nickle for the body.

I think I want to have both worlds.

Just to make this issue very clear.

Is Leica offering to sell you a Digilux III for $950.00 or $1,75.00 conditioned upon your giving them your Digilux II and any boxes and original materials that came with the Digilux II.

or

Is Leica offering to sell you a Digilux III at a reduced cost pending repair and return of your Digilux II to you once it's finished?

Chris, I suggest in the case of your 'second' and very optimistic interpretation,..... it should not matter what state your D2 box/material is in.............

Must be this loooooong hot summer soltice day influencing u.....

The letter read "...instead of having your camera repaired, exchanged it for a brand new $2,800 Leica Digilux 3...." so it will be a swap for $950.

Let me get this straight: While the discounted street price of the L1 has fallen and hovers around half that of the D3, Leica is going to raise the retail price to $2800?!

Curiouser and Curiouser!

IIRC Gerald in another thread received a brand new D2

Ok, "mine" is back from Leica Switzerland after a short 12 days trip... well, not exactly mine as they kindly and simply decided to exchange my 3 years old D2 for a new one.
. I didn't know there were any "new" ones still around!

And someone else mentioned the same offer a while ago.

Are they really having difficulty shifting them? Not surprising at the pricing.

Personally I would stick with the D2, but then I have an L1 already. If I hadn't I would really be in a quandry.

It just doesn't sound right to be left without a camera for a quarter of a year and then be expected to pay an extra $1000 for a COMPLETELY different kind of camera in exchange.

Its great that Leica took it upon themselves to extend the warranty to cover the faulty sensors... but it seems like some kind of "double dipping" to me.

If that's the option, my advice is to pick up an L1 for $1000 and wait for the Digilux 2 to make its way back from Solms.

They're complementary cameras that work well in different situations.

I have a D2 that replaced my LC-2 and has only about 50 shots on it. I am saving it for trips and as a reminder that I never should have sold my Leica M back in the day. The L1 is my camera of choice.

I suggest that you tell Leica to go ahead and repair the D2, and purchase an L1, which will cost you only a bit more than their deal, and you will have TWO cameras, not one. And you won't care if it takes three months.

That is what I did in a differenct way. When my LC-1 started getting some weird results, I bought an L1 for $1200 USD. 2 days after the l1 arrived the LC-1 sensor died.

I sent it in to Panasonic for repair. It took them 6 weeks to get back to me with an estimate. After many phone calls they finally told me it would be $591 to repair the LC-1 (I also had a cracked plastic cover on the LCD.) I just hope they have the sensors in stock at the Panasonic repair facility in Chicago.

I am not happy paying for a sensor when they know they have a problem with them.....but the camera is out of warantee and I do love it. I hope the new sensor lasts more than 19 months.

But....I will have 2 great cameras when I am done with it all.

The LC-1, in my view is irreplaceable. I have the L1 and its a great camera, but for stree photography, the L1 is unusable--it's just too loud. I do lots of event photography, and most of the time, I reach for the LC-1, again, the L1 is just too loud and pollutes the shooting environment.

I would not trade up.

Mine was sent to Solms 2 months ago. May be I should check with my dealer here.

Frankly, I do not expect Leica or Panasonic to stock a 5M CCD for years after they run out of production. The worst case is they will never to able to replace it if they had already run out their reserve stock.

Another point is, how long will the replaced CCD last? Will it exhibit the same purple cast after 30 months?

If they can never replace the CCD, then go D3 may become the only possible route which is now they 'politely inviting'.

the sensor is a Sony part, and had a manufacturing fault

replacement sensors appear to be fine

Hope so. Riley.

In this era, digital sensors were just bulk manufactured one to several times within a very short period of time. Once they're run out, the manufacturer will tell you it is obsolete =)
