M8 -- Just a Glorified P&S!?

So what is new? Since the day camera builders started filling up the consumer cameras with little Japanese goblins that do the thinking for the great unwashed, artisan tools like Leica M cameras have been bashed as lesser cameras for a higher price. You know - these critics are right. In their hands a P&S is sure to return far better results than a M8, or at least better in the TV-eroded mind? of the average couch potato. Even the best photographs taken with an M8 ( or Canon 1DsIII etc. for that matter) are likely to be met with a blank stare of incomprehension. The only difference is that this group has attained a larger platform to air their excuses for an opinion. It is more telling about the level DPReview is sinking to, than about the level of the cameras discussed. So let's stop wasting serious bandwidth on this.

So, Joe, these people may be owners of equally expensive Canon rigs that have image stabilization, auto focus, and look more impressive because they are bigger and weigh more, but those are not P&S cameras?

For the Canon P&S rigs, I especially like the shotgun mode (15-shot buffer) that guarantees you won't get the right shot.

I think Canon's big rigs do 3-4 shots per second. I do dance photog and like to get dancers in the air. A dancer stays at the top of a leap (that position is referred to as "ballon" [2 l's?] ) for maybe 1/200 of a second or less. I know this because I shoot at 1/250 for this purpose and there is always blur in the image of the dancer. That means that the shotgun images, which are 1/4 second apart, just won't get the right image.

Let's call a spade a spade -- and then forget this silly discussion.

I could not agree more, Bill. An old pro once told me, way back when the motor-driven Nikons came into vogue: So you can take three frames a second. The shutterspeed will be maybe 1/500th. That means you will not be taking a photograph for 98.5 % of the time, practically guaranteeing that you miss the shot. I've never forgotten.

I do wildlife. It is much harder the right result of a flying bird with autofocus. I know - I've tried. Very much easier to get average results though ;)

for 99% of photographers.

Leicas have never been easy to use I dont reckon. But you can go so much further with them. Unfortunately most users dont and often defend the indefensible.

I still think it a shame Leica didnt hand the lens bayonet and the rangefinder assembly to a competent manufacturer with a performance brief.

Hey anyone tried Boags St George?

Garbage. I watched the Rolex Kentucky Derby and the machine gun started three paces before the jump and didnt stop till two gallops after landing and the images were stellar.

Tell yo uwhat you have to fight for space. PB is still a draw card. Two Linhofs on the beach last time I went, a thousand digital point and shoots, some bird with a tripod a 400mm lens and a pop up flash on her Canon. What a stallion:rolleyes::o.

If the salvo boys on the PB get a eyefull of the tits it'll probably break up and spill more tha a couple of beans.... better keep things on a leash........just nip behind the bush for a pee.........................as long as it's sanctioned by the makers a lie should ensure

There is some magic, some emotion in their pictures that was never there with any other camera they had.
