looking at Veirie pictures, I cant really see the need for anything longer than 2 or 3 second exposures , I also cant see the need for anything over the 60 second limit that Leica put on the Soo7 unless you are shooting archeology and the likes.

Why would the FOV be different on a S compared to a SL ...........surly 30mm is 30mm on a big sensor over a small sensor (leaving out crop factor) Example my S70mm sumerlux is just about the same as my Noctilux 50 verses 55mm.

If Veire's lenses have all had the new AF motor then he should feel comfotatable taking just his S, saying that as a norm it doesn't matter what camera system you use "Leica, Nikon, Canon" if its a one off important trip, then take a back up................. "Sh!t Happens"

Read his articles, here and elsewhere.... HE likes long exposures. Nothing to do with my preference... or yours.

Field of view...."except for the crop". What do you think the crop does to effective field of view? (Focal length of course doesn't change.... that's a property of the lens) Your 30 has an effective FOV of a 24 compared to the SL, where it would act as a 30 (in terms of FOV).

You own this stuff...set up your tripod and mount the same lens on both cameras and check resulting view.

Backup is backup. You asked why he might use the adapter. This would be my number one reason for owning it.... in case the S failed, not the lens.

My point is if he already has a SL with him then he would have SL and or M lenses, if the S craps out then shoot with the SL and SL or M lenses.

Like I said earlier, Yuri has got some lovely pictures with his SL...................I pesonnely prefer his S images that he has posted many on here already.

But the beauty of the SL is that it can accept all of his lenses, just requiring a small adapter. Ideal backup with no need to lose lens options.

I know you prefer the S images, but that's different from the 4 other reasons I gave.

Now conduct the FOV exercise I gave you and report back. :)

SMALL adapter.........are you kidding me, its nearly the same size as my Noctilux :)

Unfortunately I am 250 mile offshore in the Gulf of Genie and the only thing electrical with me is a vibrator :) :) :) :)

Love

I don't want to know what you're doing with a vibrator.

The Noctilux weighs 3x the adapter. In any case, here's what Vieri wrote about why he likes it...

I have that adapter Jeff. It's in a drawer along with a bunch more adapters that I don't and probably will never use. Good on Veiri if he likes it....... it's not for me.

I know you have it, which is why I suggested you take 5 minutes to conduct the little FOV exercise. Take a pic from the same place with your 30 on both cameras and see the difference in FOV. At least maybe you'll come to better understand your own gear, and how this technical stuff translates to practical differences.

By the way, in his review, Vieri gave you some of the same reasons for liking the adapter that I thought he would. It's not always about IQ.

Neil and Jeff,

sorry for the delayed response, these are very busy days around here. I think Jeff got my reasons for the way I organised my kit back then pretty much perfectly. In short, my kit was a SL and a S, lenses were 10mm and 15mm Voigtlander (VM, with the M-Adapter T), 24, 35 and 70 mm Leica S (with the S-Adapter T to be able to use them on the SL as well):

- SL: for ultra-wide work, with the 10mm and 15mm Voigtlander;

- SL: for exposures longer than a minute, which I do pretty often (60-70% of my images, I'd say);

- S: for 19, 28 and 52mm FOV equivalent images where I don't need longer exposures.

The S-to-SL adapter served as backup in case of S's failure (never happened) or be able to take long exposures with focal lengths other than the 10 and 15mm without having to carry around the 24-90mm as well, thus expanding my focal length range with the SL for long exposures (happened many times).

That kit served me well for all my 2016/2017 winter season; however, since late May 2017 I changed it into:

- 2 x SL;

- 24-90mm;

- 10 and 15mm Voigtlander (with the M-Adapter T);

- 90-280mm (only for the locations that might need it);

With this kit, I saved lot of room and weight in my bag; I streamlined battery chargers and spare battery; I gained in reach and flexibility I gained in practicality in the field, where I don't have to fiddle with adapters, to change from the S to the SL where I to decide to take a photo of a scene with the SL for longer exposures after starting working it with the S; I gained in ease of backup; and so on. The only drawback with my new kit is that I had to give up to the beautiful files of the S 007, which at exposures shorter than 10 seconds are unbeatable - in truth, however, I have to say that the more I work with them the more I love the SL's files, which (short of the S 007 when used in the conditions the camera shines) are among the best files I have ever seen.

Hope this helps, best regards

Vieri
