Stainless question

I am considering moving from plastic tanks and reels to stainless. I notice Arista gives a choice between SS and PVC lids for their SS tanks. The SS tops represent about 40% additional cost. Is there any reason to go with the SS lids, rather than the PVC?

Just my experience with Nikor SS tanks and lids - the lids tend to stick, very hard to remove. This happens most often when lids are mismatched. I replaced all my SS lids with Kinderman plastic lids 40 years ago and have been much happier.

Mostly durability. I use rubber/plastic lids for my steel tanks, and eventually they wear out. But one reason I use them is they're easier to peel off; stainless steel can be tough to get a grip on when it's wet.

I know you didn't ask about reels - but my gratuitous advice is, it's worth spending extra to get Hewes reels.

Thanks for the quick responses.

I do note the Hewes represent a significant increase in cost......But, the whole point here is to see if SS renders a better result. I will give the hewes some considertion.

Will the Hewes reels fit in the Arista tanks? I note there are Hewes reels that are designated " For JOBO," and others that are labeled "Hewes Pro" but do not indicate what tanks they are for.

Gaffer tape around the lid

Never used kinder man plastic,  but was very upset with some economy ones when I turned on the lights and found it split center to edge, silently,  leaving a nice pie shape light leak.  Yes film was ruined

I've used stainless Nikor tanks and lids for 50 years without problems. I have changed to Hewes reels, and recommend them.

Tom,

Have you ever found that the Hewes reels sit higher in the Nikor tank and touch the light baffle or otherwise prevent the lid from sitting down completely, contributing to leaking? It's like the Nikor reels are made of thinner stock and are not as high.

My Nikor tanks need no help leaking,

s-a
