jackal Posted June 18, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) has anyone spoken to leica about whether they intend to redesign or Mod the WATE so that it brings up different framelines, thereby relieving the photographer of the WATE focal length menu ? if this is possibly in store, then i wonder if its something that could be retro-fitted or would it require a completely new lens i am on the cusp of buying the WATE and would like to make a fully informed choice thanks R

marknorton Posted June 18, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 18, 2007 I think if the IR issue and the solution to it had been fully understood/appreciated, they may well have designed it differently but it seems like the lens is flying off the shelves as it is and with good reason, it's a great lens. I have the CV15 and the WATE and I tend to use the CV 95% of the time. I just think it gives better results and is smaller, though admittedly less flexible. I have a Milich coded mount for it and use it with a filter, something I have yet to be able to do with the WATE, though I have a Milich filter holder on order for it. I was even thinking of selling my WATE... or swapping it for a MATE... Best t

jackal Posted June 18, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted June 18, 2007 yep thanks teh main thing thats pulling me toward the WATE is the following: 1. i usually shoot 28mm @ F8 in the street 2. on the occasion when i want wider street shots or landscapes then i obviously take the 15mm CV but that lens is never enough on its own, its too limiting.. and so ultimately a WATE is a better proposition than taking 2 lenses (cv + 21 ASPH). Also, WATE has the benefit of slightly better resolution than the 21mm elmarit and coupled focusing at all focal lengths. as stated, i wouldn't use filters (been using photoshop since version 2 and am a VFX supervisor by trade so i can do pretty much anything I want with any photograph very quickly) and i therefore wouldn't need to mess about with the WATE menu and also I would not use the Frankenfinder. So not only do a save money but also i skip the major drawbacks of the WATE.
