Eastgreenlander Posted February 1, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 1, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry if this topic have been covered before. Does anyone know if the Zeiss Batis line of lenses will be available with Leica SL mount?
Advertisement Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Hi Eastgreenlander, Take a look here Zeiss Batis for Leica SL. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
edwardkaraa Posted February 1, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 1, 2017 That would be very doubtful. Zeiss policy is never to reverse engineer, so if this is ever going to happen, it must be with full cooperation with Leica.
steppenw0lf Posted February 1, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 1, 2017 I asked a while ago (more general if they plan lenses for the SL) and they referred to the ZM and Milvus/Otus/Classic lenses.

edwardkaraa Posted February 2, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 2, 2017 Are A7 and SL that different in mount/sonsor flange distance? The A7 is definitely thinner, but don't know by how much.
ramarren Posted February 3, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 3, 2017 The A7 is definitely thinner, but don't know by how much. The A7 mount register (Sony E mount) is 18mm, the Leica TL-SL mount register (Leica TL mount) is 19mm. This means that Sony E mount lenses would need to be 1mm shorter to the mounting flange to have the correct mount register for Leica TL mount, and Leica TL lenses would need to be extended by 1mm for the converse situation ... Never mind the differences in flange diameter, bayonet design, and other potential mechanical incompatibilities.
simon_hsn Posted March 2, 2018 Share #7 Posted March 2, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use the Batis lenses on my Sony a7 series camera (25 and 85) and for me, they strike the perfect balance for size, performance and price. I would love to use some Zeiss Batis lenses with the SL, I think even the design works well with the Leica SL body. Let's hope that Zeiss finds out a way how to handle the 1 mm difference in flange distance and bring out that sweet Batis lens lineup!

Let's hope that Zeiss finds out a way how to handle the 1 mm difference in flange distance and bring out that sweet Batis lens lineup! It is not going to happen. As Zeiss said ZM and Otus/Milvis/Classic lines work via suitable adapter. I find APO Sonnar 2/135 As good as APO Elmarit 180mm and APO Telyt 280mm. Irakly Shanidze Posted March 3, 2018 Share #9 Posted March 3, 2018 I spoke to Zeiss people on 2016 Photokina. They weren't interested despite a perfect window of opportunity, as it was clear that Leica would not be able to produce SL primes for at least two years. mls1483 Posted March 13, 2018 Share #10 Posted March 13, 2018 The TL-SL mount is patented. Why should Leica give Zeiss a license and sell less lenses because of competition? Zeiss ZM and Voigtländer VM lenses did not appear before the patent for the M mount had ceased.
