In truth, unless you churn through gear very frequently (something I have done in the past, perhaps more than I'd quite like to admit to now) the discontinuation of the scheme is not a great practical loss. The scheme had already been reduced to one year so the protection offered by the passport was very limited in relation to the working life of the gear. Better IMO to arrange your own insurance than pay for it indirectly in the price of the products (though I doubt that whatever savings Leica will make are going to be passed on to the customer in any meaningful sense). However, I think the scheme did provide a feeling of extra quality about Leica's products (a little something extra that other manufacturers weren't offering) that gave the buyer a warm fuzzy feeling that perhaps Leica shouldn't have underestimated. In the US it was three years, and replacement or repair without question. It applied to lenses, and I think not to camera bodies. I had to exercise it on my Elmarit-asph M, purchased when the M8 was new. I think I got such a warranty only a few years ago when I purchased a Summilux-asph-FLE 35-M. There are multiple sorts of warranties currently offered, 1 year (refurbished) 2 year (new), etc. scott Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
