Handgrip battery: storage or active?

Got home late tonight so the SL and 24-90 are still in their packaging. Have work early tomorrow so can't open them now. A great thanks to Ken Hasen.

Looking at all the online info on the SL handgrip, it states there is only storage for a 2nd battery. After downloading and reading the first pages of the manual earlier, there are electrical contacts on the bottom of the camera. Does that mean the handgrip battery is used to power the system without the need to switch it to the camera battery compartment?

Yes, the handgrip offers room for a second battery and some additional buttons for shots in portrait orientation. Of course it is electrically connected to the camera.   :)

First the battery in the handgrip is emptied, then the one in the camera body. Both should be enough for almost a day of shooting (depends on the number of shots you take, and the amount of fiddling in the menus), typically enough for 800 images or more.  (per battery typically 400 - 600 images for me)

New batteries will not get to the 100% mark, they will have slightly less power. They need several cycles before they reach the optimum (3 to 5 typically).

I have difference experience: my battery on the body was empty and the camera shut off. So the second battery on the handgrip didn't backup.
