I have decided to stop shooting with my Monochrom and commit to shooting black and white film as my results are very similar.

Currently I have the opportunity to swap with two different people. Can't decide which option to take...

 

MM for m6ttl.58 and M7 al la carte plus cash

 

Or

 

MM for MP chrome .72 plus cash. (MP body is a bit scratched up)

 

Both options are offering similar cash incentives.

 

What would you do?

Even though I prefer 0,72x finders I think I'd go for the TTL and the M7 (which finder btw?) because it's good to have two bodies and the M7 also has aperture priority which some say is handy.

I would keep the monochrome and buy an M2.

I won't presume to suggest which alternative is better for you, but maybe my experience and decision will give you some ideas.

 

I had a M7 and M9 and after shooting them for a while I found that neither were what I hoped for. So I made the decision to find what I wanted. In my case it is the M-A, a fully manual film camera with no meters or batteries. It also has full frame lines for 28/35/50 and smaller "outline" frames for 75/90/135 focal lengths - essentially covering every lens I would ever use. The finder is bright and I've not noticed any flare. It's very similar to the MP, but the finder is a bit less cluttered without the display for the light meter of the MP. For me it's the camera that scratched my itch. It's likely the last new film camera Leica will ever make and will outlast me by decades.

 

Seems to me you have two decisions. You already decided to sell the Monochrome - so start there. Then find the film cameras that interest you, go physically see and touch them, and decide if the 0.58 finder works for you - it didn't for me - or if there is a particular model,that checks all the boxes you're interested in. If the MP is a bit "scratched up" will that bother you after the honeymoon is over? It would bother me.

 

My point is that the decision to sell the MM seems like you're doing what you feel is best, why not make the same decision with the film camera you want to buy? If you had cash in hand would you want both a M6ttl 0.58 finder and a M7, or would you want a mint MP or M-A, or even an older mint M2/3? Do you want a camera with a battery in it or not? Do you want a built in light meter or not? Is it important to replace the Monochrome with a film camera and get net cash, or would you rather get the ideal film camera even if the net cash is less?

 

It doesn't matter what we want, but I think you'll be happier if you get what you want. Don't settle for just any film camera, get the one that makes you smile, makes you want to hold it, and you enjoy owning/shooting it. That's what the M-A did for me. And I'm totally happy with it - I don't anticipate ever selling it, and that's the type of camera I think you're looking for - whatever model it is.

 

Isn't that why you're selling the Monochrome - to enjoy the experience of film?

The 'keep it and buy an M2' suggestion is best. But if the results are so similar why bother anyway?

 

I'm not a great fan of replacing one camera with another that does the essentially the same thing, and if I didn't already have draws full of cameras and was in a similar position I'd buy a different type of camera to dedicate to film. Could be medium format, a top brand P&S to carry in a pocket, or alternatively a camera that can do things a Leica M can't do, so a Nikon F2 and a truck load of lenses for a fraction of the price.

Yes I have see that article before. The photographer does a nice job comparing.

For me the Monochrom was the ultimate for a long time. It did push me back into shooting more film and more also

taking film more seriously. That's how I started shooting and can remember once saying that I would never shoot digital. Funny how things change.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the MP.  Glad you found what you want.  Now go enjoy the camera!  By the way, Leica included a roll of Tri-X with my M-A.  You may want to try that film in your MP if you like B/W shots.
