Question about a 90mm Lens

I'm a Leica neophyte and need some advice.  I've been offered an APO-Simmicron-M 1:2/90  ASPH (read from the lens sunshade). A bit further around the sunshade is the designation E55.  The S/N is 3955XXX and it's not coded.  The lens is flawless and looks brand new.  The gentleman offering inherited it and told me to use it for a few days.

I would appreciate your advice on a reasonable price to pay for this item.

Many thanks,

Mike

There are two currently listed in the Buy & Sell Section of the Forum (and a dozen or so on ebay) : so, you can get a good idea of the current prices : if you are a neophyte to Leica, take into account that it is not an "easy" lens : costly, rather heavy, and focusing a 90 at f2 through the VF/RF is a task to get accustomed to...

One of the very best 90mm lenses ever made, if somewhat heavy, as correctly noted by Luigi. Have a look at the current sales price for a brand new lens (it is still available brand new from the factory), and then decide for yourself. It has never been a cheap lens by any means ...

Cheers,

Andy

It's a great lens !!

If it's flawless and looks brand new then it's going to be quite expensive, even secondhand. Other things can push up the value too for some people. If it's boxed for example, or if it still has both original caps and leather pouch.

Thank you, gentlemen!  The lens doesn't have the original packaging but it does have both lens caps and is in a leather-like soft case.  I've checked current prices on E-Bay and a couple of other sources and they seem to be going for $2000 to $2800 US.  I think I can get it for around $1800.

Check that the focus is working well with your M body.  You may have the added cost of adjusting focus on the lens, sending both lens and body to Leica is necessary.  Then check that it is sharp, or meets your requirements as a good copy.  $1800 would be reasonable without the added expenses of focus adjustment.  One more thing, 6 bit coding can be expensive if done through Leica, there are cheaper methods including do it yourself.  I purchased the same lens through a dealer for $3000 several years ago, it had a few small cosmetic issues but it focused perfectly with my M body and it was a good sample when I tested it.  I didn't 6 bit code the lens, it doesn't need it except for informational purposes.

Just got home from the camera store with my new M-P and assorted "stuff."  I'll get the 90mm mounted tomorrow and check it out.  I really appreciate all of the replies with your suggestions. a911s, you're quite right.  The lens is a chunk but I'm used to a Nikon D3 with variable focal length lenses.

Thank you, gentlemen!
