andybarton Posted July 25, 2010 Share #1661 Posted July 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) No. The film and lens couldn't care less, and I shot my M7 on manual mode this morning just for the hell of it
Advertisement Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Hi andybarton, Take a look here I love my MP. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted July 25, 2010 Share #1662 Posted July 25, 2010 In truth, the chrome MP is the classier and more tasteful camera. The black paint MP (which I have) is unnecessarily gaudy with its shiny chrome shutter release collar and rather too glossy paint. The black chrome border around the rear flap/panel also looks out of place with the rest of the camera. If we are to get all warm and fuzzy about build quality and engineering excellence, the M2, M3 and M4 all have the MP licked. The latter might also have nice brass gears but the fit and finish isn't up to the standard of the bodies of 40 years ago and the MP (after the first run) also has a very cheap and nasty ISO selector that wouldn't look out of place on a Holga. FiZZ Posted July 26, 2010 Share #1664 Posted July 26, 2010 i revist this thread a lot. Love my mp although to be honest, its becoming a dust shelf queen these days. Anyway, all my leicas are and i do not have a free moment to use them - work oblige ! Nonetheless, in a couple of days i will go on vacation and will take my new m9 ( have the thing since march and took only less than 100 pics with it - a crime, i know - when people are still waiting months for one ) and because of this thread, i miss my mp, she will be taken as well ! On the plus side, won an amateur photo contest and the first prize ( drumroll............. ) was a 50 pack of film of your choice. Well, the choices were limited and i have choosen 50 packs of fomapan 100 ... So my mp will see some use soon on the holidays .) buy also have to say, i cannot stress how great that picture is : Fantastic composition of a picture that for me, its in terms of creativity heads and shoulders above all others - one of those pictures you look and say "bloody brilliant, how didnt i saw that ?" best regards to all, damn you all. I can't afford an mp!!! =(
peter_n Posted July 27, 2010 Share #1665 Posted July 27, 2010 I am very tempted to trade my M7 and 90 Summarit (plus some cash, probably), but I do fear I would miss the Auto exposure.I used two M7s for a few years then 2½ years ago I bought two MPs within the space of a few days (they happened to come on the market here at the same time). I sold one of the M7s immediately but kept the other just in case. However I never used it again and last year sold it too. I don't miss AE at all... DerekF Posted July 27, 2010 Share #1666 Posted July 27, 2010 I agree, I think AE is overrated. When I shoot with my M9, I always think I'll use AE but I generally end up going manual within a few shots, especially when trickier lighting scenarios present themselves. I find AE is only useful when lighting is relatively predictable and I'm feeling lazy. Of course, I have no such choice to make with my MPs.
andybarton Posted July 27, 2010 Share #1667 Posted July 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I do use the "half press on the shutter" a lot with my M7. But the auto exposure is so good, it would be a shame to waste it. What I would pay good money for is an MP with Auto exposure. That must be easily do-able. andybarton Posted July 27, 2010 Share #1669 Posted July 27, 2010 Just a Little one I'm going to call Stefan tomorrow and make a suggestion as to how I can turn round Leica by upgrading non-core lines
chrism Posted July 27, 2010 Share #1670 Posted July 27, 2010 A bigger splash than it would at first seem, as the AE MP would most likely use the infinitely variable electronic shutter of the M7, and there goes battery independence! Unless, this is, Leica would spend the cash on developing an AE system for the mechanical shutter, which seems unlikely. To be honest, batteries are relatively cheap and light, and I have about six spare. I'd be OK with an AE MP using the M7 shutter. Heresy, I know.... menos I M6 Posted July 27, 2010 Share #1672 Posted July 27, 2010 I do use the "half press on the shutter" a lot with my M7. But the auto exposure is so good, it would be a shame to waste it. What I would pay good money for is an MP with Auto exposure. That must be easily do-able. You could order a M7 a la carte with MP externals, knob rewind, no markings and pretend, it is an MP with bigger shutter speed dial but added AE. It might well even feel smoother as people will have that placebo MP thing in mind over the lowly M7 mindset, when using it ;-)

Not sure you can pretend that far, my friend.
menos I M6 Posted July 28, 2010 Share #1674 Posted July 28, 2010 ...M7 (à la carte or otherwise) with a rewind knob? Not sure you can pretend that far, my friend. Mmmhh - looked back at the configurator. I knew, you could order a MP with angled rewind crank and supposed the other way around would be possible too for ordering an a la carte M7 - it is not (at least not on the official website). In any case the M7 without engraving and with simplistic style top deck looks as an MP with angled rewind except the bigger shutter speed dial. Choose as you like ;-)

gwelland Posted July 31, 2010 Share #1679 Posted July 31, 2010 It's taken me over ten years of Leica ownership of M6 TTL, M7, M8, M8u, M8.2 & M9 to finally get the one camera I've irrationally wanted as my last film camera ... On Tuesday my M8 & M9 will get their film compatriot again and I have to say that I'm really looking forward to it. I enjoyed the few years that I shot with the M7 but I always wanted the "mechanical perfection" as my long term film "keeper" but never found the one I wanted at a time that I had the discretionary funds burning a hole in my pocket to buy one. This week it all came together. I went chrome ...
jplomley Posted July 31, 2010 Share #1680 Posted July 31, 2010 I'm a happy owner of a pair of M7's, but after reading this thread and seeing the fine images of all those MPs, I'm wondering if my satisfaction is simply unjustified......I honestly have no complaints with either M7, they simply deliver the goods. But this thread has me wondering if I'm missing out on the "genuine" Leica experience. Perhaps all along I've been nothing but a fraud, a Leica wannabe, a deviant from the craft. Perhaps not shooting with an MP has deprived me of all that is Leica. Damn I hate threads like this.....just when I thought I had everything I needed, feelings of lust have awaken
