Please, don't call it "sharkskin".

Try first the feeling of the real sharkskin vulcanit on a Leica IIIc, you'll then know the big difference.

So "roofing paper" cover it is then :)

Note to everyone, from now on please refrain from calling the stock covering on an MP "shark skin". Hence forth, it will be referred to as "roofing paper". For example, "I'm considering changing the covering on my Yorki so that it more closely resembles an MP. If I order some "roofing paper", do you think this will fool anyone? And which will give me better bokeh, roofing paper or griptac???"

Yeah, or "sandpaper", but used. ;)

I did made the change on the MP and the M8, couldn't stand it.

Depend, if you wear gloves or not. ;)

Very beautiful!

I wish, Leica would offer a la carte versions of the M8/ M9 without engraved model no. and dot.

The clean look of the MP with just one screw for the service entrance is simply beautiful.

Using the film rewind as the drive mode selector would be another fantastic thing to do.

This would make buying an M9 soo much easier an decision ;-)

i didn't think i would, but i like the roofing paper!

i think silver chrome bodies look refined with the standard covering. the modern vulkanit is shiny and the texture is too rounded and curdy; it doesn't come close to the original vulcanite. as far as silver chrome is concerned, the m6/m7 style covering is preferable to the new vulkanit. like the roofing paper, it's not as reflective or high relief.

the texture and reflectivity of the standard covering complement black paint the least. the new vulkanit is definitely the best choice in this case. black saddle leather is also a great match.

i imagine a black chrome mp looks its best with the roofing paper, because of the fine, even texture and lower reflectivity. very industrial, i'd say.

That roofing paper is atrocious.

It's so bad, such a cheap cost cutting measure that it makes me sick to look at it. It's such a cheap material, so cheaply manufactured that you even see the squares, a pattern, in it.

It seems that pattern in the roofing paper on the M8 has been corrected but it was still an atrocious choice for a company as prestigious as Leica.

It's like if Ferraris came with cheap eastern European 13" tires on them. And I'm phrobably being generous.

Mine had the squares and it was horrible. I will try to dig a picture of it, if I still have it.

I purchased Aki Asahi's Pebble covering. It's the perfect match for the Black Paint finish, with that balancing shine.

And it's cheap!

Here are some posts where you can see the manufacturing pattern in the covering: 958, 1120, 1146, 1152, 1158, 1160, 1179, 1228.

I will try to find some sample images where it's really obvious.

It appears JBA's MP has that defect since each and every image of his MP shows it, just as mine did.

As I mentioned, my M8 didn't have that ugly pattern so I guess it simply might have been a bad batch. Shame to Leica.

But nonetheless, bad batch or good batch, that covering was an insult. From Vulcanite to this?

I agree with Ned. The standard MP covering is lame in turns of gripping function and in terms of cosmetics. Why not Leica's Vulkanit? Why not Griptac or one of aki's? That standard covering just begs to be replaced. It is the only thing I haven't liked about the mp.

Indeed, I have 3 MPs and all of them show a sort of checkerboard pattern in the roofing paper. Atrocious, as you said. I just haven't had the wherewithal to get them re-covered yet.

I love my MP as well. I did buy a Artisan half leather case I guess also to be honest cause I thought the covering was sub-standard. I much prefer the covering on my M4, which I bought second hand and I suspect has been recovered at one stage as there's a gap just under the back panel wheel meter. I think I'll investigate if anywhere in Australia can recover M's. Or, I'll buy the kits you can order online.
