Guest dk_samurai Posted February 2, 2010 Share #1449 Posted February 2, 2010 >> stealthman_1>> David Hope it is not off-topic in this wonderful MP-thread. If so, mods., feel free to eradicate this ... Here is a quick sample taken with the above digital combo this afternoon. The weather in Germany is very wet and cold just now, so this is an indoor-shot just behind a window (M9 with a 50mm ELMAR 3.5 - set to f 4.5 - from the old Barnack days, about 1928). >> Phillipe this is a great combo ! I would love to use a NOCTULUX on the digital LEICA-M. Enjoy your LEICA MP ! Best GEORG Brilliant that such an old lens can be used in the modern digital age! Thanks for sharing! /David
Guest dk_samurai Posted February 2, 2010 Share #1450 Posted February 2, 2010 Yes David ! This was a must for me. Next should be the hot shoe. Indeed the shiny chrome ring is a bit of a distraction for me too. And the Leica script and serial number annoys me as well. Would like to black it out some day, but bit busy these at the moment. What method did you use to black out the chrome ring? /David

Niandra Posted February 4, 2010 Share #1456 Posted February 4, 2010 (edited) Hello, First off, what an amazing thread! I've managed to take it all in after a few hours behind the screen. It's just that great- and addictive! The reason I'm posting is that I'd like to take the plunge and purchase an MP for myself. Being a 20 year old college student, it'll be a couple of months before I'm able to afford it, but I thought I might as well ask some questions first. My first question is about the aesthetics (of all things)... I've noticed, with the black MP's, that some are a highly glossy black, while others seem to be a matte sort of black. Is it just my eyes playing tricks on me or is this the case? I'd prefer the matte version myself, assuming it exists! My next question is: If you were purchasing your first Leica (cost aside), would it be the MP? I've been quite intrigued by the M6 "classic" and M3. The reason I'm not so interested in the M7 is that I wouldn't really like to have any electronics in my first Leica as I want it to be as "old school" an experience as possible- hence why I've narrowed it down to these three models, with the MP being the leader so far. I feel as if though these are just the best engineered cameras ever! Mechanical perfection My final question is this: If you had to pick only one lens to start with-- something I'm assuming most people do --which would it be and why? I'd purchase a second one, though it'd be about a year before I could do so due to their high costs. Personally, I'd like a lens that'd work well for portraits as well as urban cityscape photography. Shooting landscapes would be a plus, too! As fast as possible, for low light/night shooting, without breaking the bank too much! I guess you could say I'm looking for an "all-in-one" lens, though I don't like using that term as I too often find these combo lenses are decent at everything, but never really great at one thing. I'm guessing, though, that the Leica glass is quite different from anything else out there. I know that's a lot of questions, but I was uncertain of where else to ask. This entire forum is such a wealth of information for me! I absolutely love every aspect of this community and look forward to contributing over the years to come. Thanks in advance! M. P.S. Incase anyone's wondering why I've decided to get a Leica now of all possible to times to get one... well, it's because in September I'll be going to school in Paris and want to have the best of the best with which to document my stay there. I'll also be taking weekend trips to other scenic European towns, cities, villages, etc. I'll have my DSLR with me, but I really want something with more character to catch certain things and I think Leica's are just perfect! Oh, and one last thing... I need a good film camera for school, too, so what better place to start... twittle Posted February 4, 2010 Share #1457 Posted February 4, 2010 (edited) My first question is about the aesthetics (of all things)... I'd prefer the matte version myself, assuming it exists! I've not looked through the entire thread, so I'm not familiar with all the posted pictures, but I can answer this question anyway. Glossy black paint is one of the two standard MP finishes; the other is silver chrome. However, there is a matte black finish available via Leica's a-la-carte program, in which you can spec your own camera. The finish you want is called the black chrome finish; it's standard on the M7, but also available on the MP for an extra $100. My final question is this: If you had to pick only one lens to start with-- something I'm assuming most people do --which would it be and why?...Personally, I'd like a lens that'd work well for portraits as well as urban cityscape photography. Most people will tell you to buy a 50 because it's a good general focal length and can be used in a variety of situations. Oh, and welcome to the world of Leica. menos I M6 Posted February 4, 2010 Share #1459 Posted February 4, 2010 If you are one of those college students who is concerned about price, how about a used M? Anything M2 through M6 could suit your needs for far less. Many MP users here will disagree, but if money is an important issue and the body is not to an big extent bought due to the wish for perfection and aesthetic satisfaction, a classic Leica M6 will give you the same performance with a very similar handling and look as the 2 − 3 times the expense of an used MP. If you just start with a film Leica now, the small performance differences will be not immediately eminent to you (mainly the upgraded viewfinder with less flare in difficult lighting). A used M6 goes for much less than 1.000,- EUR and could open you the door to a better initial lens or even a good pair of lenses to start with. Basically, you can get a good M6 classic + a 35 Summicron pre ASPH for the same price, you would buy a used MP. The M6 classic comes standard in black matte chrome. I have started with my first Leica with a silver chrome M6 classic, have bought an additional M7 and play with the idea of getting a digital M sooner or later. I am 100 % certain, a MP lays on my path too. I keep it for the cherry of the cake though as the M6 and M7 are perfectly doing the job. Oh and a word to the MP users, who posted here: "I love your MPs!"
Niandra Posted February 4, 2010 Share #1460 Posted February 4, 2010 Thanks so much for your replies! Much appreciated. Thanks for the info on the matte black finish, didn't know that! I do love my 50mm with my Nikon, so I imagine I'd feel the same with it on a Leica! What are some other "general purpose" focal lengths to look out for? Maybe a 35mm? Pricewise, It'd be great if I could keep the body alone under $2000... Since I'm going used, this shouldn't be much for a problem. eBay seems to have some nice deals on the M3, M6 and MP. It's the lenses that'll take a big chunk of my change, hence why I can only afford to go with one at the start. What are the main differences between the M3, M6 and MP, from a technical standpoint? Will the quality of images differ greatly from one model to the next? I do appologize for all these silly questions! I'm very excited to dip my feet into film photography seriously. I've got a Nikon F75 for film stuff and an old Ricoh, but I know this is a totally different league- a league which I'm very anxious to start exploring! It's like I'm heading out on a whole new journey Thanks again, folks!
