That silver IIIb in the middle is what started it all. It was a gift from dad. The MP's are down in front.

Funny, as an M4 owner (2x) and previous M6 owner, I have gotten so used to the rewind crank that I couldn't imagine anything else being used. I know they make the MP with rewind crank (like M4, M7) but it seems no-one here ever ordered one ?

I would love to see an actual MP in black with that style of crank if anyone here does have one….

Cheers,

Theo

I thought so too, using my M6 as my first Leica M.

It took me only one day with an MP and I immediately ordered a MP style advance lever for my M6 as well.

The advantage is not it's classic looks - that's a matter of subjective taste only.

The old style advance lever's advantage is, that one can advance the film in one smooth motion from being completely folded without first needing to "unfold" the lever.

This way, the old MP style lever is faster and more simple to shoot.

I wouldn't go back to the M4/M6 style lever again.

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for the remark from a user/owner !

Personally I can't comment regarding details of MP rewind; I only know the screw mount variety on my IIIf, which is similar in concept but not identical...

Having said that, I don't see much physical difference with having to first pull up the old style rewind knob before being able to rewind. I mean this in reference to the 'single motion' you mention, because there isn't one as far as i understand it ?

Pulling a knob up and out before twisting to rewind the film seems (in my mind anyway) more 'effort' (ahem) than unfolding the M4 crank with the flip of a fingertip flip and turning away.

I guess I have to try one out to get an idea about it ;-0)

Maybe I'll get hooked.

Cheers,

Theo

Ah, my total misunderstanding, then it's clear indeed !

I was so focussed on the rewind aspect that I automatically read it that way.

I agree 100% with you on that.

Have another chrome M4 that was given the 'M3' treatment' and has M3 style advance lever, like the MP.

It is indeed much nicer to use, and I indeed prefer it by far..

And simpler to change than a rewind system.

Mon Dieu, what a thread!

After shooting Nikon Fs for forty-one years I purchased a 1959 M3 and a 50 Summicron V4. I'm in love with it; the whole rangefinder manner of doing and seeing things. So now I've been lured by the configurator and I need to hear some of your experiences/regrets with viewfinders. I see a lot of .72s but has anyone later wished they bought the .58, or vice-versa? The frame lines for both are almost identical. I need glasses to clearly see the M3's engravings but not to use the viewfinder. Santa brought a 28 Elmarit ASPH and that is likely as wide as I'll ever go. For longer needs I have a 105 and a 180 for the Nikons.

I'll also mention that I am struck by just how pretty the chrome M3 is. It gets noticed a lot (too much?) by people. My Nikons are black and brassed and lovely but they have enough chrome to make a 'panda' MP look very pretty to me.

thx,

s-a

Hi all!

Just received the slides from my first day out with my new MP and 28/2 ASPH.. I really enjoyed that first day and I am sure that this will become a very long friendship.

Btw. great thread!

And good results too... nice saturated colours, what film did you use?
