MisterTwo Posted December 17, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2016 You'll find the pros and cons of a front UV or clear filter on Leica lenses is a bit of a religious argument around here, that said I use a B+W 82mm XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano 007 Filter and am happy with it. screwmount Posted December 17, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2016 When I visited the plant, back then in Solms, the guide told us, that Leica glass does not need a protection. It is made for serios work.....
LocalHero1953 Posted December 17, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2016 I don't use one. I rely on the hood for protection.
LD_50 Posted December 17, 2016 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2016 When I visited the plant, back then in Solms, the guide told us, that Leica glass does not need a protection. It is made for serios work..... Obviously they are not referring to the type of protection that many are seeking with UV filters (scratch, impact, etc). The 24-90 has an AquaDura coated (hydrophobic, dirt/water repellant) front element to reduce the risk of scratching and spotting from reduced cleaning. There are a number of discussions about use of clear filters on this site. Everything one could want to know about opinions of members live in those threads. IkarusJohn Posted December 17, 2016 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2016 My father used to tell me to put a UV filter on each lens from new. The time I dropped a camera, the filter broke and dents the front of the len and the thread. Still worked fine, but I gave up on UV filters after that. The lens hood offers better protection, in my view.
LD_50 Posted December 17, 2016 Share #7 Posted December 17, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I feel the lens hood offers great protection for the 24-90 as well. The last lens I used a filter on was my Nikkor 200f2. The front element was huge and I was always worried about accidentally banging it into something. The lens hood was so massive that I didn't often use it.
ramarren Posted December 17, 2016 Share #8 Posted December 17, 2016 Just wondering what front UV protection filter you have on your 24/90 lens. I don't use one. The only filter I've needed so far is a polarizer, I bought a nice Rodenstock filter that works like a charm.

If you are going to use one, the B+W filters (UV or clear) are fine, if expensive, although less expensive than the Leica filters.
