I notice that if I right eye shoot, my left eye is normally open, which could lead to shutting of the iris (and maybe retinal bleaching) of both eyes and the assumption that the EVF is insufficiently bright. When I left eye shoot, my right eye is normally closed and I don't get optical sensitivity reduction on the left eye.

Just as a "by the way" comment, retinal bleaching takes place in the retina itself, while the pupillary reflex is mediated by the brain.  So retinal bleaching is unilateral and pupillary constriction is bilateral, unless one has a significant localized neurological problem.
