M-D and Eyefi cards (not to chimp but for after uploading)

Hi folks,

Im planning to move from M9-P to M-D.

Im interested in both higher iso quality of the newer sensor AND the 'film like' experience not havinf the LCD.

This said, I am enyoing a lot the ability to upload my pics to my iPad or iPhone after shooting (not really for chimping but for calmly 'develop' them on the go while having a coffee).

I have a pretty good workflow with my iPad Pro, DNG and lightroom that I plan to maintain.

Question:

My Eyefi cards are set to upload only pics that have been protected in camera.

I did this when using my Nikon Df... otherwise my Battery would drain in a single morning when attenmpting to connect constantly.

Now, I am not sure how the MD would behave... as I cannot protect any (which is fine). Im just concerned with battery life.

Any users can report?

It would be a major drawback if I cannot use wifi...

Thanks for the help!

As you wrote, you cant lock any of the images. That gives the result that EyE-Fi uploads all the images that are on the card into the app.

And with the MD having DNG only it is a slow and tiresome process. So it does work, but it is slow as hell and it drains battery quickly.

And, also, since iOS doesn't´t support Leica DNGs (At least that was the case when i tried it a couple of months ago, might be different now), you only get a low-rez preview of the image. So I would say the solution is not really usable. It wasn't for me anyways.

Thank you Erfahrener,

I just realized that maybe the easiest solution would be to carry a lightning to SD adapton for 35$.

But I liked the easy workflow of wifi... not to say I have the new Macbook Pro (no SD slot)...

I would appreciate if anyone has been in my same position before.

Thanks!

I got spoiled by the way the Q works. It has a good workflow for quickly publishing images.

Never got it to work the same way with the M-D. But the M-D is such a totally different approach that I'm not sure it should work that way. :)

An sd-adapter could work, but im still not sure that iOS support DNGs from Leica. So im not sure you can get anything decent to work with either way.

Have you tried DNGs from M240, M-D, M-262 on your iPad?

I've used a 32gb EyeFi Pro (i.e. Black, not orange) card in my M-D since I bought the camera back in the spring. Seems to work fine for me, no issues with battery drain that I've noticed, and whilst download isn't fast I can live with it.

I have to admit that I use the card for purely frivolous reasons. That is, I enjoy peeking at my work on my iPad, via LR mobile, when I stop for a coffee or a beer. (The images download into 'Photos' (unviewable and pixelated) and must then be imported into LR for viewing).

Yes, I know, it's shallow of me not to be able to wait until I get home.....

Yes, but Leica DNGs are pixelated and very small in native apps.

Yes, they are essentially unviewable. That's my experience with my M-D and Wifi cards, downloading images to my iPad and viewed in native apps. You need LR mobile to view them properly, i.e., at anything approaching iPad screen size.

  • 1 month later...

I used Eye-Fi Pro X2 (see photo) on my M-D before Eye-Fi the company discontinued the Pro X2 product at end of 2016.

Back then, activation for the Pro X2 card was done via Eye-Fi Center PC software. Via the Eye-Fi iOS App, I was able to transfer photos/DNG to my iPhone and then access the DNG using LR Mobile .... Because of the product discontinuation, I am not able to do so now. The IOS Apple is no longer working.

Per the product discontinuation, Eye-Fi the company (now with a new identification) came up with a X2 utility which allows the Pro X2 to download photos to PC (only). However, there is no software or customer support about this X2 utility.

Also, I don't think they came up with a new IOS App for iPhone or iPad ..... So, no more wireless transfer of photos to iPhone or iPad.

If anybody still using Eye-Fi Pro X2 on M-D and still can transfer photos to iPhone or iPad, please explain how. Big thanks.

Every seems to think chimping is a bad habit.

It is not!

Use it to check the historgram, to see if eyes are open and to check for sharpness etc. If I see any issue I shoot some more frames. It is much better to find you have an issue when you may have a chance to be able to fix it, rather than when you are back at the computer and having to rely on your Photoshop skills to dig you out of a hole.

I am using eyefi mobi pro 32g Sd card on my MD.

Work nicely with the eyefi app on my ipad mini.

It download automaticaly the last images from the newest one, then move backward , as soon as the app is start and ipad lock to the wifi of the SD CARD. 1 meter distance. you put the code only once when you buy the card.

It is very very usefull, take 25 s per pictures.

eye app can immediately put the Raw in your apple photo but...

IOS JUST SHOW YOU CRAPY PIXELIZED IMAGE ( just enough to recognize the picture, no more)

Lauch LIGHTROOM MOBILE AND YOU GET A DREAM software to do your raw.

don't use anymore my desktop apple.

so usefull, so modern, the best of both word: classic camera build to stay in the action.

Last ipad screen and powerfull processor to developp the raw and show to your friends.

Byby JPG....

Hope the M10D is on the way.

To be exact, while Eye-Fi technology is still available, it's a business decision which Eye-Fi the company discontinued Pro X2 and required customers to pay an annual subscription fee for the wireless download to iPad/iPhone via a new iOS App and Eye-Fi Cloud for the Mobi Pro SD Card.

The discontinued Pro X2 SD Card technically is still able to download photos to Mac and Windows computers via Eye-Fi X2 Utility. But there is no software or customer support for Eye-Fi X2 Utility.  No more iPad/iPhone. What a pity.

While Eye-Fi Pro X2 no longer works and unless I am willing to pay/do subscription with Eye-Fi for using Mobi Pro ..

While Toshiba FlashAir does not transfer DNG ...

I found a WiFi SD card named "ez Share" which is capable to transfer DNG to iPhone and iPad via its iOS App named "ezShare" without the need to subscribe/pay any service.
I tried this ezShare WiFi SD card with my M-D, I successfully transferred the DNG files from camera to iPhone and successfully converted the DNG to JPG using LR Mobile.

Though the transfer is not high speed, I regained the wireless transfer capability and with LR Mobile I can view the photos taken by the M-D, I am happy....
