Leica Q Technician? Need help with the EVF

Come on, what have you done to it?!

Pretty sure that whatever it is, your only option is to return it to Leica for repair.

I've not done anything to it. I wish to place a custom mask over the EVF, but I first need someone who's comfortable with the Leica Q. No doubt this is something Leica would be unwilling to do. Then again, I am not familiar with their customer service.

From a technician I've spoken with:

"I think what you need to find is a technician familiar with camera you want to modify that is comfortable disassembling that portion of the camera and knows whether there is enough room to insert a mask.  Fabricating a mask is fairly straight forward once the dimensions and design is determined."

I'm looking for a Leica Technician that is familiar enough with the Q that the EVF could be taken apart and reassembled. Does anyone have any ideas?

I recently had my Leica Q EVF disassembled and replaced by the official Leica Support because there was an issue.

Just to let you know, they even had to replace the leather around the camera to do so. So it doesn't look that simple for me with that. And you should also consider that you probably would loose your guaranty for the Q as well should you realise your idea.

May I ask what the issue was?

What would a custom mask achieve that cannot be achieved using the camera's 'crop mode'?  ... Or by attaching a supplementary finder? Should be reasonably easy to add e.g. aspect ratio mask to a supplementary 28mm finder.

I shoot in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. To my knowledge, it is not possible to put those frame lines on the VF or EFV.

You can take off the protection glass/plastic from the evf without being necessary to dismantle the camera. If you want to open it it is trick because it has hidden screws under the hotshoe and the leather skin.

Amazing. Did you discover this on your own or are there any resources going into more detail? Would love to know more!

On my own, but I do not recommend anyone doing it at home :)

Can you tell me anything about the location of the EVF's LCD and/or how easy it might be to have someone place a mask over it? Is there even any clearance for a thin mask when everything is reassembled? Also, I suspect that the LCD is actually at the top of the camera--the "ceiling" per se--and the image is being projected over a 45 degree mirror. Is this so?

Thanks for your time, you are the only person I've been able to find with experience in this matter.

What you see on the back of the camera is just a glass cover that acts as a protection. I took it once down with the help of a credit card it has some clips and you have to be very careful not do destroy anything. Under the glass/cover is the real lcd/evf.

I would go with the advice from dkCambridgeshire. Try first something temporary, outside, before doing something that cannot be undone.
