innerimager Posted June 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I ended up sending my M8 to New Jersey for replacement for the vertical lines that were appearing in the same area for Iso 640 and higher images. Robert Fisk was extremely responsive and helpful, I had the replacement in 1 week. He wondered, as some have here, if the problem might have been related to version 1.102 firmware. The new body came with 1.09 so I quickly tested this out. No problem in either 1.09 or after upgrading to 1.102, I can't produce any such artifacts at any iso. So, the problem seems unrelated to firmware, though of course if it were were a universal bug in 1.102, we'd all know it by now. Thanks to Leica New Jersey for a great response to my problem. Back to using the camera now, I was in withdrawal for a week! best...Peter
Advertisement Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Hi innerimager, Take a look here Vertical Line follow up. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RMF Posted June 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 14, 2007 Thanks for letting us know. I've been debating if I should send mine back because of the vertical line at 640iso and above. I've become paranoid reading the stories of people sending in their camera for replacements only to either get back one with more significant problems, wrong color body, or refurbs models (some still with problems). In real-world pics I have not seen the vertical line show up in my pics. It’s good to know that you had a fast turn-around and received a problem-free camera. Robert at Leica NJ told me that they can get me a replacement right away but I think I’m still going to hold out sending it back for a bit as I have a couple Asia trips coming up where I want to take my M8 along with me. Besides the vertical line at high iso my M8 is perfect (no backfocus issues, metering is spot-on, shutter release feels right, rangefinder perfectly aligned, etc..). DaveEP Posted June 15, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 15, 2007 I also have a vertical line problem on one of my M8s, but it's not ISO related. It only happens when the shutter is open more than 1/8 second. It's on every shot longer and no shots that are shorter. So, it's going to have to go back. innerimager Posted June 15, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted June 15, 2007 Rod- I think I wouldn't let the bad stories about replacement cameras having other problems worry you too much. There always is a major amplification effect we must filter out with problems being many times more likely to be posted than non problems. It seems the vast majority of us are pretty happy with the basic functions of the M8, and there's no reason why a replacement would be less likely to meet our expectations. Mine certainly has... Besides the vertical line at high iso my M8 is perfect (no backfocus issues, metering is spot-on, shutter release feels right, rangefinder perfectly aligned, etc..). I received a replacement for the line issue (among other things) and it was the wrong color, an early serial #, and most likely a refurb. That said, everything worked on it as I thought an M8 should and I decided to keep it (and I also fell for the silver finish, a finish I'd never even considered before being a "pro") I think Leica vets the replacements pretty closely just so they won't be returned. Personally I'd rather have one that's been thoroughly gone over by Leica service vs a "factory fresh" one.
innerimager Posted June 17, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted June 17, 2007 very sad to report- My clearly brand new replacement needs RF adjustment badly. My first tests were with a 24 elmarit stopped to 4-5.6 and looked fine. But critical tests with my 50/1.4 asph at 1.4 shows it's not even close to correct focus, with this lens performing spectacularly at 1.4 (and all others) on my old body. Back to NJ tomorrow. aarrggghhh!!
barjohn Posted June 18, 2007 Share #7 Posted June 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Check the infinity focus. It is easy to adjust. My replacement was off too. A simple adjust with the allen wrench and presto..dead on focus. I'm happy and no trip back.

RMF Posted July 20, 2007 Share #11 Posted July 20, 2007 Well I finally decided that I am going to send back my M8 with the vertical line problem for a replacement. I had originally thought that the line only appeared at 640 iso and up but have recently discovered that it appears in low light situations at 160 iso when I correct (bump up) the exposure significantly via lightroom. I recieved an email and phone call from Robert Fisk about sending my camera. Hopefully Leica NJ. will have a quick-turn around to get a camera back in my hands soon and that I get one 'sans' problems. I'll update everyone once I get a new M8 in hand.
