Digilux 2 users. how much time have you waited for yours to be rapeir.

Ok, "mine" is back from Leica Switzerland after a short 12 days trip... well, not exactly mine as they kindly and simply decided to exchange my 3 years old D2 for a new one.

 

Now I certainly know why I bought a D2 and not a LC1... :D

 

BTW, Pete, not yet received the V-Lux... Sorry. :rolleyes:

I just got a letter today from Leica NJ. They do not have any sensor units in stock and they are awaiting parts from Germany. My projected repair date is now 7/15/07. Seems like its a big problem worldwide.

No recall. Just a lot of D2's are having sensor failures.

12/13/2006 - Leica Camera AG is offering all owners of the LEICA DIGILUX 2 a customer service free of charge even beyond the stated warranty period. Specifically, this refers to exchanging the digital camera's sensor in the case of a rarely occurring malfunction. Leica Camera AG has opted for this extended warranty due to the fact that there have been a few reports of this malfunction caused by faulty manufacturing which also affects some other makes' cameras.

 

Prolonged use of the camera in tropical climate conditions has occasionally led to effects such as black stripes in the image or even a totally black image. This malfunction can be the result of sensors whose specifications do not meet the respective Leica Camera AG production and testing standards. Even though the malfunction occurs only after prolonged use in extreme conditions, i.e. perhaps even after the warranty period has expired, thanks to the service described here, the LEICA DIGILUX 2 customers can rely on having their camera repaired free of charge over a longer period of time. Thus, supported by this measure, Leica Camera AG is ensuring that the LEICA DIGILUX 2 will retain its value after having been discontinued.

My digilux 2 send to repair and I waite for 12 weeks (on feb 2005 and back on april 2005) from bangkok to singapore to german to singapore to bangkok.

No cost.

Work well

now the rubble on camera is gone & I fixed by myself with real genuin. I will send picture to show all.

 

It verry good camera I have, I carry to all.

I've been waiting eight weeks now, but received an "Upgrade to the Digilux III" offer today asking me to abandon my Digilux II in favor of sending them $1,000.00 to buy a Digilux III.

 

I think I'll pass, spend the $1,000.00 on a Panasonic L1 and wait an additional three to five months to get my Digilux II back. I don't think they're making any more of them.

My first D2 repair took 3 months and I got a free battery for my troubles. It is back in the shop for the same sensor failure after 5 months. They have had it for 2 weeks and I received a letter today stating it will take 6-7 weeks for repair; about 2 months total.

 

I'll pass on the D3 offer if it comes, even if it was free. I tried it and did not like it.

I'll pass on the D3 offer if it comes, even if it was free. I tried it and did not like it.

This is my fear. The sensor replacement isn't a long term fix. I hope this is not the case.

Just got mine after 12 weeks: they also fixed the erased distance numbers on the focus ring. I also think the software is different. On the "minus" side, i sent it to LEICA in BERLIN with a battery and the original SD card, and it came back without this. Luckily, i had two more batteries and my 512MB card at home :)

I am happy to announce that my Digilux 2 has been returned to me - repaired! :)

 

Including shipping, it took nine days. Isn't it incredible?

I didn't know about these failures until after finding this forum which unfortunately was after I bought a "LN" Digilux 2 from KEH.com. How prevalent is this problem? Is there any warning when this is coming or does it pretty much happen all at once. I am still covered in their 14 day grace period for a no-questions return. Should I unload it, or is this relatively unusual? I do gather from these threads that Leica has been very good about making good on these repairs even though the D2's are long past warranty coverage.

My Digilux 2 went off to Leica on Feb 10 to get its crumbling aperture and focus markings replaced. It finally returned in late June.

 

I’m a journalist, and faced with the need to cover a major trade show in June, I had to buy a new digital camera to take the place of the non-available Digilux 2.

 

With my 60th birthday long gone, I was finding the weight of my normal basic hobby kit (a Leicaflex SL2 + 28-70mm zoom plus an M5 + 35mm f1.4) a bit much, so had been considering a switch to digital for non-work photography. Reluctant though I was to move from Leica - the marque I've used for more than 40 years - I finally opted for a Nikon D200 DSLR.

 

Now that my D2 has finally returned, it feels so inferior in build quality to the D200 that I suspect it will in future be used only for work, or for other occasions when I need a fairly lightweight camera.

 

But on occasions when I want to use film, I'll still be able to enjoy my Ernst Leitz 'steel, brass and glass'.
