APO 180 mm strange behaviour wit ND filters

I have done 16 second exposures without filters without problems. Using a 5-stop and 10-stop filter at 8 seconds, the image is not sharp (different locations). It looks slightly out of focus. There was not a vibration that I noticed. The same images without ND filter and no other change are in focus. Anyone have similar experiences? I will do some testing further.

I should add that this behavior is only with the 180. With the 30 I have done exposures at the maximum 2 minutes with no problems. With the M9 I have also experienced no problems with Elmarit-m 28 ASPH, Zeiss 50 2.0 and Elmarit-m 90.

Also every piece of glass changes the focus a bit, so you should focus AFTER putting on the filter which might be difficult due to the low light.

With 10-stop ND is just not possible to focus after the putting  on the filter, it's just too dark no matter how you do it.

I had a similar issue with the 70mm with a 10 stop Singh Ray last week.  Majority of pictures were soft/slightly out of focus.  The lowest setting ones with the filter were fine.  I had ruled it out as operator error but now your post makes me wonder (plus there were way too many pictures on that shoot with similar issues).  I was using the 10 stop at roughly a three stop setting for lowering the background light while shooting with my profoto B2. I realise the synch speed of 1/125 used could be a factor as well but I have managed others well below this.

I will do tests with 30, 70 and 180.

What finally happened with the tests?

Albert  :o  :o  :o

Tests are pending. Other priorities came and I am preparing to move from Germany to Switzerland. In the meantime, I am not using 10-stop ND with the 180. I do plan to do the testing.

I have finally had the chance to test my four lenses, 24mm, 30mm, 70mm and 180mm, with 10-stop and 5-stop ND filters. The 24, 30 and 70 show no focus problems with either of the ND filters. However, the 180 exhibits a slight out-of-focus effect with both ND filters. The effect is noticeable without magnification.

I photographed a sheet of music alongside a printout of a resolution chart. The distance to subject was between one and two meters. All images were shot at f8.0. With the 180, I also shot at f11 to see if the effect changed. It was slightly less at f11, which one would expect if the focus was off. All images were compared to identical shots without any filters.

So, the question to 180 users; have you done shots with 10-stop or 5-stop ND filters and did you notice a focus problem?

I appreciate feedback.

Did you focus first before you put on the filter?

If you use 007, i suggest you use the Live view for focus, and make sure the Aperture is full open.

Yes. It is not possible to focus with a 10-stop filter on the lens. Also, I use a Lee system, so the filter is already in the holder when l place it on the lens. This prevents disturbing the lens.

It is possible that I moved the lens focus when placing the filter.

The people at Leica Wetzlar have done a similar test after I informed them of my experience. They could not duplicate my results. I will ask them which filter they used.
