eudemian Posted June 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I think I may end up with egg on my face but so what . I have just received my milich adapter (nice piece of engineering) for the cv 15 Heliar and tried the new combo on the M8. Everything seems to fit well but I cannot focus the lens. Obviously I am missing some elementary detail here so please, advice. I presume that you are able to focus this lens on the M8 in the same way as the Leica M lenses??? Tom
Advertisement Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Hi eudemian, Take a look here cv 15 and Focusing?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jackal Posted June 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 13, 2007 nope, its not rangefinder coupled you cant focus it through the finder but its so wide who cares hyperfocal it or guess or just use the distance scale and approximate i guess if you really need focusing you could buy the WATE or teh zeiss for a bazillion times the price
Guest sirvine Posted June 13, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 13, 2007 Thomas, This lens is not coupled to the rangefinder. You need to focus by the markers on the top of the lens, but remember that the depth of field is quite forgiving. I am normally shooting at or near infinity with this lens. Note that the focusing ring moves very quickly to the near-field (and this lens focuses quite close at minimum distance, if I recall). My only complaint is that between the "4" and infinity markers, there is a lot of blank space!
eudemian Posted June 13, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted June 13, 2007 Well that is solved. I will investigate this, probably hperfocal everything I like simplicity. Thanks for the super quick and informative response. Tom
huwge Posted June 13, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 13, 2007 Tom - welcome to the luxury end of the point and shoot scale. I tend to keep things at f8 where possible as this seems to be the most forgiving setting when guessing distance and seeking corner to corner sharpness. Very happy with this lens - CV21 viewfinder helps as well. Huw
GMB Posted June 13, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 13, 2007 BTW. I ordered one today and learned they dropped the price from Euros 599 to Euro 399, including the viewfinder. Nice surprise.
eudemian Posted June 13, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted June 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for all the help. I now get it recognised as a TriElmar I choose 16 is that correct? I look forward to tomorrow and some wide angle shots. Hope it is as good as everyone says. Tom
carstenw Posted June 13, 2007 Share #8 Posted June 13, 2007 George, the CV15 was always €399. The 12mm is €599. I think.
farnz Posted June 13, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 13, 2007 ... I now get it recognised as a TriElmar I choose 16 is that correct?... Whereabouts in the menu do you select the 16mm option after it's recognised as a WATE?
carstenw Posted June 13, 2007 Share #10 Posted June 13, 2007 Pete, you get that choice only for Lens Detection: ON+IR. Then it happens when you turn the camera on.
Guest sirvine Posted June 13, 2007 Share #11 Posted June 13, 2007 I do wish that the WATE focal length selection menu would stay put until you change it. Choosing each time the camera comes on is a little odd. Not a major deal, but if I'm awakening the camera from sleep with the shutter button I usually end up bypassing the selection menu by pressing the shutter too many times and this apparently defaults me to 18mm. At least it should default to the last selection made. Of course, I've never seen any visual problem with the images, so...no harm, no foul I guess. robertwright Posted June 13, 2007 Share #12 Posted June 13, 2007 for me it defaults to the last setting I made, so if I choose 21 for the CV15, every-time thereafter it comes up as 21, and I don't have to set it, I just have to touch the shutter button. farnz Posted June 13, 2007 Share #13 Posted June 13, 2007 Thanks, Carsten. I've received my John Milich adaptor (beautiful piece of workmanship - thanks, John!) and I'm now trying to pursuade the M8 to read the code. Lazy attempt first, black pit only, so now I have to find some white paint and do it properly. Hey-ho. Pete.
eudemian Posted June 13, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted June 13, 2007 I have just filled in the one black pit I have left the others untouched and the coding works fine. The simpler the better as far as I am concerned. Tom
egibaud Posted June 14, 2007 Share #15 Posted June 14, 2007 Hi, I have just received the adapter too :-))) great stuff, about half the price of the lense though :-) The CV15 comes with a guessmeter LOL no rangefinder coupled, but really not a problem, indicate what you guess the distance is and the guessmeter makes the job :-) By the way I coded the ring with White and Black Tamiya scale model matte paint. Just drop a tiny drop of paint in the small spaces and off you go, let dry and you are ready. Eric
Zoran Milich Posted June 17, 2007 Share #16 Posted June 17, 2007 Hi Thomas (my 1st post on the Leica forum) I also use the Milich adaptor (no relation to me at all) on my M8 & a 15mm Heliar every day on the streets of Copacabana. Its a God-send with my M8 taped black where I can shoot candid without being notice and or mugged. At f/8 the lens is awesome with the M8. You can follow my M8 and this lens daily here: http://www.zoranmilich.com/zee
grober Posted June 18, 2007 Share #17 Posted June 18, 2007 To shoot with the CV 15mm Heliar, set the focus at 2m and fire away (in "street shooter" mode.) If the intended subject is nearer than 3m, than "guestimate" the distance and set the focus ring accordingly. This little beauty has such a wide depth of field that you can get away with a lot. -g
