Lens Warranty Question

It's the so-called 3 yr passport warranty. No fault, if anything's wrong bring it back and Leica will fix. I put scratches on the rear element of a new lens under this warranty by using an old, too shallow, back cap, and they rebuilt the lens without any questions.

I've done the same with older caps on newer lenses. So far no damage, but looks close. Which lens did you damage if I may ask?

Something to remember about the Passport from Leica on your new lens (quoting from the red letters on the part of the form one keeps):

"IMPORTANT: Your Leica product must be registered within 30 days from the date of purchase to obtain the exclusive Leica 3 Year Passport Protection Plan. All required fields must be filled out on the Registration and Warranty Application and mailed within 30 days."

Rather than rely on a legible postmark, I'd mail it enough in advance so it arrives before the 30 days end.

I haven't felt the need to use certified mail (even though the sending receipt provides a postmark in postal purple), but some might.

My sense is that the Leica is quite fair and reasonable to deal with; I see no reason to make their life (and one's own) harder by hanging on the registration form beyond a couple of days to check out the lens.
