Thank you, Leica UK!

I'm glad to be able to report excellent service from Leica UK Service Centre.

Having made enquiries with Leica UK about having my 21mm ASPH coded I was awaiting a new shipment of mounts. Last week I called them and spoke to the very helpful David Humphries, who told me that the new mounts had arrived and that they had some spare (they had had a big demand for the 21mm ASPH mounts and had over-ordered from Germany). I asked to reserve one and said I would bring the lens personally.

Today I took the 1 hour trip to the Leica UK HQ at Milton Keynes where I found a warm welcome. The young lady who attended to me took my lens and about 20 minutes later it was done. It was just a simple mount swap - they did no other work, checking the lens or anything, which I had not asked for.

It was excellent service. I was told that there are three lens that Leica UK cannot code, the Tri-elmar and the 90mm 'cron and one other that I forget (not one that I have.)

I'm lucky to be so close to the Service Centre.

Thank you, Leica UK.

Tim

So they do coding in the UK? I thought they had to go to Solms.....

Hmmm.... I may call them and ask about a couple of mine doing. I have no problem driving there (though it's about 3 hours each way) if they can do them that quickly!

David, some lenses do have to go back to Solms, others can be done in Milton Keynes.

My Nocti and Tri-Elmar are in Germany being coded, my 24mm Elmarit, 35mm ASPH Summicron and 50mm Summicron were done while I waited in MK.

Dave,

They also told me that the turn-around for coding at Solms had increased markedly recently, now taking between 6-8 weeks. Earlier this year it was taking 2 weeks. They seemed to think that people were waiting till the early rush was over, but, of course, if everyone did that then .....

Steve,

the Nocti - that was the third lens I had forgotten that I was told had to go back to Solms for coding.

When I just bought my Tri-Elmar (unfortunately not coded) I was told the wait time was now up to 10-12 weeks for some lenses :(

Hand coding is getting me by for now, but I have 5 lenses than need coding now, so I just fired of an e-mail to Leica UK to see which can and can't be done here.

I guess I need to figure out what vouchers I actually have to get this stuff done..... weren't there some with the M8, and another one that came with a lens if bought a 6 bit lens new?

That should give me a few to go at :)

As A Brit, I think you have approximately no vouchers for this work, although I hope I am wrong. I think only U.S.A.-ians and Canadians got two vouchers per new lens.

HI Carsten

I'm afraid you're right - two filters and that's your lot. Although, a bit of politeness and you may be able to get free coding for uncoded lenses bought new after June 2006.

The guys were really helpful when I phoned them up for the first time recently. However one did say that he'd stopped visiting web forums (sorry, fora just doesn't sound right) since he was upset that some posts had been personal and very negative.

Thus I applaud these positive messages for a job well done - even if they might be oblivious to the situation!

Anyone care to speculate why the Nocti, TE and 90/2 have to go back to Solms for coding? The TE has a spring attached but I doubt that's the reason. The Nocti is one of the lenses which goes down from 6 screws to 5, I don't have the 90/2so not sure about that one.

My guess would be that the 90 Cron Asph and Noctilux may be the two lenses which are most sensitive to minor misadjustments in the mount. I am surprised the 75 Lux is not on your list, but maybe the mount is simpler, since it doesn't have a ring, but just a little push-pull tab for focusing. The Tri-Elmar is the most complicated lens Leica makes (made), and they probably just want to make sure that it is fine after a mount-swap.

the 90 f2.8 has to go back to Solms as well - and my 21mm pre-asph too - I think that there are others.

When you take the Nocti mount screws out the whole focus mount starts moving underneath it. The lens mount screws go into a brass ring that is floating free until you tighten the screws. Where the lens is when theses screws are tightened affects the infinity setting.

Secondly, my noctilux mount and 90mm APO Summicron Elcan were the only mounts that seemed to have been manually lapped to adjust thickness.

Which it isn't. It was fine before coding; now I have to wiggle the 50 mm setting to bring up the framelines....

Update: After this post I decided to have a go at this one. I loosened all screws and found that some were extremely tight and some so loose that they were wobbling in their holes. So I set the lens to 28 (minimum tension on the spring) and tightened the screws in torque steps of 5 Ncm up to 25 Ncm working crosswise.(As a dentist I use these tools for implants...) Suddenly the framelines come up flawlessly.:) Bad QC at the coding operation, imo:mad:
