taroyamasaki Posted June 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello - I am a long time Leica rangefinder user/ long time photojournalist - but bought my first M8 yesterday. The firmware in this body is 1.09. The serial # is: 3109547. Could someone please tell me how many firmware upgrades have been introduced since this body was manufactured/shipped? More importantly, have there been any hardware changes to the M8 after this particular body was manufactured/shipped? Thanks very much - taroyamasaki

larry Posted June 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2007 Hi Taro, There have been two upgrades since the firmware was installed in your camera. Here's a link to the latest version on Leica's Web site: Leica Camera AG - Downloads To my knowledge, the camera hasn't changed since the first copies were recalled in November. Shootist Posted June 12, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 12, 2007 Thank you, Larry - 1 more question - does the latest firmware upgrade - 1.102 - incorporate all the previous firmware upgrades? thanks - Taro Yes it does and you can go directly from 1.09 to 1.102. I did that yesterday with a new replacement chrome M8 sent to me from Leica NJ. Serial # on the one I got from NJ was 3109xxx and the brand new one I bought, black, last week from B&H was 325xxx, I believe, and had the 1.102 firmware already installed. Serial # are all over the place and until Leica publishes, or lets known, some type of record of which serial # go with which month/week/year of manufacture no one will really know when there unit was made. Hi Ed I had a chat with Leica UK about serial numbers and equipment - not specifically with relationship to bodies. He said that they don't publish lists any more, specifically because serial numbers do NOT go with date of manufacture. The example I was talking about was a 35 f2 'cron which I bought new, and which looked like it might be several years old - however, the box, and the 6 bit coding suggested it was new. In the case of the M8, one would imagine that the serial number originates with the manufacture of the top - plate, which could easily be made in batches and then used back to front (if you see what I mean). Shootist Posted June 12, 2007 Share #7 Posted June 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I understand Leica's stand on this but it just seems odd that any company does not keep a record of what serial numbered items shipped on which date. Taking that into account I wouldn't think that any manufacture of any product would have stock from items made 2-3-4-5 months ago just sitting around while they shipped out item that were made 1-2 weeks ago. Especially if they were the same exact product. So it would seem that ship date would be close to manufacture date, in a perfect world. But since there was just a thread about someone that bought a M8 in France and when he went to register it for the free filters the website came back with a error saying that that serial # was not in the database. So who really knows what Leica does. Sometimes I don't even think they know what they are doing. I suspect this will change as from what I read Stephen Lee loves to be organized.
