SD vs CF card viability; SL & M

Hello: With my former M9, and M240 and now the SL, I have had SD cards (SanDisk) corrupt; once on my M9, twice on my M240 (both now sold), and once on my SL. In all cases, after capturing many files, I'd get a warning dialog something to the effect "card needs to be formatted". Camera would not continue unless I replaced the card or in the case with a 2-card slot body, I'd just need to remove the bad card. Images on the cards before the dialog were still there and could be downloaded safely. I could not reformat the bad card in the camera. I've "never" (don't say that too loud), had CF issues when using my Canon bodies. I just yesterday had the same SD issue on my DSMKIII. Removed the SD card and continued on writing to the CF card.

 

Has anyone else found the structure of SD cards to be more fragile in comparison to their CF cousins?

I've never had a problem with SD cards on the M (since 2011) or the SL (10 months)

Are you sure you've bought genuine SanDisk cards? Fakes purporting to be the genuine article are common. Google 'SanDisk fakes' to find out more.

I haven't used CF cards in anything other than my Olympus E-1 since 2011. I've been using SD cards in cameras since 2003. I've had M9, M-P, SL, and M-D model Leicas since 2012, in which I've used Sandisk Extreme Pro 8, 16, and 32 Gbyte cards, and Lexar 1000x 128G cards. I've likely recorded a quarter million exposures total on SD cards, half that on CF cards.

 

To date, I have not yet had either a CF or SD card go bad, and have not had any card IO problems at all.

Can't be, the internals are the same flash memory - but as said, there are fake Sandisk cards, and plenty of them.  In general the CF interface is considerably more vulnerable, with its zillion pins.
