War: this building has been in this state for well over a year now - the Smithfield area was slated for redevelopment, but I gather from a local that the council vetoed the commercial plans since it was deemed to be an area of historical interest, so the whole place is currently in limbo. Ah - so it's part of that development, is it. The developer wished to flatten the whole area and build a steel/glass monstrosity for purely commercial reasons. (Not that I"m against all steel/glass boxes BTW). I'm not sure of the current "state of play". I suspect there's an appeal against the decision of the local authority which will go to the Planning Inspectorate. This can take a long time!
