Ming Thein on 24-90 focus shift

I purchased the Digloyd Leica subscription.

His report somewhat does not really make sense on the 24-90.

1-He complains about the automatic corrections and they would make it impossible to get sharp images on the edges because there would be so much distortion on this lens.

Then further he finds out, that at 90mm there is no correction applied.

2-according to him it's impossible to hit focus with this lens.

 

My comment on this:

1-If the corrections are a real world problem the quality of the lens should be at it's best at the 90 setting. This is not the case. From my experience the 90 is the weakest point.

2-Focus is spot on with my lens and it might have been a firmware issue. Never did I get even close to such a good hitrate with Nikon or Canon, and certainly not with Sony(I had the a7r2)

 

It's physics the 24-90 is not as light as the M primes and not as fast. In studio at f8 there is not much of a difference to see and I'm on a tripod.

I don't know about build quality:

my color is coming off quite easily already on the SL. I never had that happened even after 2 years of use on any other camera. It certainly is not influencing fuctionality but resell value. with the M some might argue it looks cool. common leica, a 7k camera and color comes off. even the cheapest cams manage to handle that problem.

Is it possible that you use straps with some metal pieces on it ? Use only a soft strap - and the color will stay where it belongs.

After 11 months I have no problem.

orc999: After a year and a month's nearly constant use, my SL looks and feels brand new. This said, I've had people hand me a camera identical to my own many times that they had for only a week and it already looked tattered and worn, where my cameras usually still look practically new, despite lots of use, a decade later. I can only judge that how a particular person handles and uses their camera is the deciding factor in this regard. 

 

Regards the SL24-90 lens: The only new news on this front since July 2016 is that the recently released firmware v2.2 seems to have improved by yet another small increment the AF system/focus peaking algorithm, and thereby improved the autofocus accuracy of the lens @ 90mm setting, particularly when focusing near infinity. It was first noted by someone on DPReview before I did the firmware update, so I took a few moments to shoot a series, testing every aperture, of a simple target (a nearby apartment building) with the camera and lens mounted on a sturdy tripod. I set it up at easily reproducible marks about 100m away. I then did the fw update and went back to reshoot the test. There is indeed a small but noticeable improvement in the focus accuracy—it gets lost in my normal use of the lens hand-held, but with the tripod capture it's observable. 

 

I have absolutely no complaints about the SL or the SL24-90 lens. I can see various opportunities for improvement but none of those thoughts amount to a complaint.
