jmahto Posted August 12, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I noticed that my M240 was reset to default. All my profiles were reset to USER1,2... and quality was set to JPEG. I always shoot DNG but after importing last night's meteorite shower shoot I noticed that it saved only JPEG. That is when I noticed that something was wrong. I was on previous firmware. After this I upgraded to latest firmware. My profiles were simple therefore I recreated and saved it. Usually I do not keep checking whether I am shooting in DNG or JPEG therefore it is worrisome that camera will switch to JPEG automatically. I noticed an old thread on this but nobody figured what might cause it. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/230921-m240-settings-resetting-to-default-by-themselfs/ Has anybody faced this recently? Edit: I wanted to add that in almost two years of ownership and 4343 saved pics (from LR count), this is the first glitch that I find worrisome. cirke Posted August 12, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 12, 2016 was it after the firmware update ? because I had a few time that problem my settings were not kept or not totally , I had to do do it 3 times and now it works
hoppyman Posted August 12, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 12, 2016 The firmware instructions...When installing the new Firmware version, all user profiles will be deleted and need to be set again after the new firmware is installed. We recommend taking note of the specific settings before updating.
Bill Livingston Posted August 12, 2016 Share #4 Posted August 12, 2016 It's easier to save all your profiles to a card and then reinstall them after the firmware update. It's easy with an M240P... just check your profile menu and one of the options is to export all profiles.
jaapv Posted August 12, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 12, 2016 It is even a good idea to save them to a small card and carry it with you in case you mess them up - or want to add a fith one temporarily
Guest roey Posted August 13, 2016 Share #6 Posted August 13, 2016 This has happened to me a few months ago. I believe that I accidentally chose the reset menu option when I meant to format the card. These two menu options are next to each other and they both show a similar confirmation dialog -- it is fairly easy to confuse them when you are in a hurry. jmahto Posted August 13, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted August 13, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) No. It was before firmware update. I don't think I accidentally reset from the menu. I hardly access the menu. I don't format the card in a regular basis. I simply do delete all. I think it was some kind of malfunction. I did see some members reporting similar issue in the linked thread. I was wondering whether anyone ran into it recently and have some idea about what caused it. For me losing profiles was a small issue. Main issue was camera switching to JPEG only which I came to know only after the shoot.

edwardkaraa Posted August 13, 2016 Share #9 Posted August 13, 2016 I think in the most recent firmware, the camera defaults to DNG + JPG after a reset.

Edit: I wanted to add that in almost two years of ownership and 4343 saved pics (from LR count), this is the first glitch that I find worrisome. I haven't seen this happen with my M-P. When I did the last fw update, out of habit I exported my settings, wiped everything, updated, and reimported my settings so I never noticed what it might have set as the defaults. It is a good idea, however, whenever you pick up a camera to use: check its battery state and configuration. Since I have presets for all my standard use modes with the M-P and SL, whenever I take them out I make a quick check that the mode I expect to be using is set and whether the battery is up to snuff for my expected session. If you do that, you find yourself caught out by surprises far less of the time.

However, in my case the profiles were wiped out and replaced with user1,2 etc. Since it has happened only once, I am wondering whether it was a result of accidental menu press or a glitch. I keep my camera on all the time (sleep in 2 min), therefore accidental key press to reset is always a possibility.

I leave power on when I'm in a shooting session, but power off between sessions. It doesn't take any longer to wake up from power on than from sleep, I just have to remember to use the switch. jto555 Posted August 14, 2016 Share #13 Posted August 14, 2016 One question Jayant, what firmware is on your camera? Firmware 2.0.3 should, when the camera resets, default to DNG + Jpeg. However, in saying that, I just got a body back from Leica and the camera was set to Jpeg only. So, either somebody in Leica has no idea how important it is to shoot RAW or the camera resets to Jpeg only. Both cases are worring.

I had the prev firmware version during the automatic reset I guess I had done firmware upgrade at the end of 2014. Do not recall the version number. After this incidence I updated to the latest 2.0.3. (This is my post #1000 !!! )

jmahto Posted August 15, 2016 Author Share #19 Posted August 15, 2016 can we see some pictures from the meteorite shower? I was very tired and didn't care for any artistic shot by driving to some remote place for good background. I just placed the camera facing up on a table in my backyard and let it click all night while I slept soundly. I had the sense to turn off the sprinkler in the yard before going to sleep though. The following technique works beautifully for night photography. It even works for star trail if you wish, despite black frames. - Attach wired remote to the shutter. - Lens: infinity, f/2.8 or f/4 as you wish. I picked f/2.8 for my 28mm cron ASPH. - ISO 1600, A mode. - Shutter C mode. - Press the shutter and lock it in the wired remote so that it keeps taking picture after every 16 sec (8sec exposure + 8sec black frame) till battery runs out. With fully charged battery and rear display off, camera can go on for almost 4 hours and 900 frames! Yes, you can miss meteorites during the black frames but I don't care that much. In my 4 hour shoot, I got 15 meteorite streaks from the Perseid shower. Here is one bright streak. I liked the color variation along the streak. Since it was shot in JPEG (damn glitch) and AWB, I didn't have much control in the post for colors and noise. Fortunately grain was well controlled in JPEG with all standard setting (that's what camera had reverted to after the glitch). Welcome, dear visitor!
