Hi Ivan B and Mmradman!

Thanks for your information of adaptor!

Pls. advise if the adaptor Noveflex LET/NIK - for Nikon F to T/L can work for Zeiss Apo 135 ZF2 on SL 601.

I have got both SL 601 and M10 with current adaptor Leica M-T/L.

IMO Leica fears the competition if they officially would allow Zeiss to offer their Loxia and Batis lenses in Leica SL mount. I think Zeiss would be interested because regarding their ZM lenses, I guess they expected to sell them mainly to users of digital Leica M cameras, less to users of their own M-mount analogue rangefinder camera.

But Leica generally is not very open to cooperations with other brands. Alpa for example suggested Leica to offer a Leica S mount adapter for their FPS camera (they already have shift and non shift adapters in Canon EF, Contax 645 and Hasselblad H mounts, all with full auto-aperture and EXIF support), but no interest by Leica.

Leica will never allow anybody to build lenses for their mounts - because this is additional competition. For this reasons camera mounts are patented. There are other brands for the M mount (like Zeiss ZM and Voigtländer/Cosina VM), because the patent on the M mount  is no longer valid (after 20 years patents cease). Leica camera sales live from the excellent Leica lenses, especially the M line. Every camera manufacturer also wants to sell lenses - as Sony does now. I think this is absolutely understandable.

BTW, last time I was visiting Leica in Wetzlar I asked for at least some support for the excellent Zeiss Distagon 15mm f/2.8 ZM, since Leica is not offering an own 15mm fixed prime lens (the WATE is a zoom). The faces froze immediately.

Yes, this is the correct one. You can also buy it from Novoflex directly.

My father worked for an engineering business which had a 'patent breaking' department. I believe that patents have to fulfil certain criteria in order to be valid and upheld. A simple straightforward design which has no real innovation is apparently hard to patent as its easy to argue that it is simply a variation on a theme (so I gathered anyway). Whether a camera mount is truly protectable remains to be seen and in any case using it (as adapters do) means reverse engineering and even then, does not will not help with software corrections which need to be transmitted to the camera too (reverse software engineering). So I don't see the idea of fitting other manufacturer's lenses being terribly stoppable, although if they are fitted then they will face the challenge of electronic integration even so.

Why would you like to use this rather expensive adapter supporting AF if one wants to use Zeiss 2/135 on SL?

This one is much more affordable and works perfectly with manual lenses:

  • 5 years later...

Having bought a L-EF adapter recently, I started looking at some EF lenses, and this one showed up.

New for around 1100€ it seems a very neat price to me. Doing seascapes with following set will make a nice combo:

- sigma dn 24/2

- SL35apo

- m lux 50

- cz 135 apo

Great to see the opportunities one has with the L-mount…

  • 4 weeks later...

So, I finally picked up the 135mm and this weekend had a play with it. Being used to 50mm, 135mm suddenly fills up my frame quite quickly.

Anyway, some taken in the village with the 2s, all wide open:
