One problem with finding replacement screws, etc is that sometimes Manufacturers make parts like screws to "proprietary standards". This sometimes means that the Manufacturer chooses a non-standard diameter, pitch, etc & then makes the parts to that different standard.

Not my experience. Why manufacture a complex grub screw when you can buy them at ludicrously low prices per unit? I have stripped down several (Japanese) cameras and a couple of years ago I gave all the tiny screws to a camera repairer specialising in European cameras and he was very pleased to have them. Draw your own conclusions.

I have a fond spot in my heart for small fasteners. This week I passed a strong magnet through a vibratory polisher and found a dearly missed tiny screw that worked for a Focotar I rebuilt. The screw driver had a tip I could not see without a loupe. That's precision!

 

In all, I am fascinated by micro-tools. They do not take up much space. Oh, and they usually co$t more than their big brothers. I do love the field of micro-machining. Small is good to me.

Micro grub screws are a complete pain in the arse when they fall into a drain cover when they should be sitting happily snug in a £2500 lens.

One would hope they would be able to perform such a simple repair in house, and very quickly.....

Hope you get it back soon Andy! I guess the reason Mayfair wouldn't send you the part is because you fitting it would void the lens' warranty?

I picked up the lens from my local dealer this afternoon.

 

In the end, he obtained a screw from Leica and fixed it himself. If it had gone to Mayfair, it would have had to go to Wetzlar to be repaired. Can you believe it?

 

Anyway, as always, excellent service from David Stephens, even though I actually bought the lens elsewhere.
