Alon Posted September 1, 2017 Share #21  Posted September 1, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am interested in obtaining an R apo 180/2.8 ROM to use on my SL. I don't know much about R lenses but I have learned that there were apparently two versions of this lens: the R1 and R2 versions. Can anyone tell me what the differences were between these two versions?  Thank you, Mark Although the declared difference between the Elmarit APO f2.8 version 1 and version 2 is the fact that version 2 takes the 1.4 Extender.  The unspoken difference is that version 2 does not produce Ninja stars while version 1 does.

tritentrue Posted September 2, 2017 Share #27  Posted September 2, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I chose a busy background for the previous shots to show the bokeh in a more challenging setting.   The shot below is its customary rendering (minus the posterization!) against a less busy background:  1/2500@f/2.8, ISO 100 . . .  Welcome, dear visitor! masjah Posted September 2, 2017 Share #29 Â Posted September 2, 2017 I'm afraid I've led a sheltered life; please could someone explain what is a "Ninja lens" or "Ninja stars"?
Steve McGarrett Posted September 2, 2017 Share #30  Posted September 2, 2017 (edited) Don't worry John, it's not a big deal  We are just referring to the shape of highlights circles in bokeh, when the iris is not fully open: in some lenses, such as old Zeiss Planar 1.4/85 per Contax (C/Y) cameras, for example, the polygonal shape of the iris blades reminds a bit a "ninja star" because it's like that:  https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/15684968846_77811ec473_b.jpg (i think this is a Planar 85) Edited September 2, 2017 by Steve McGarrett

Presumably the v2 modification to take the 1.4x extender involves moving the rearmost element further into the lens, with a slight change in the power of the element to compensate, so it's plausible that there might be a knock-on effect (improvement?) in this way. It looks to be the same shot from the front of the lens plus a UV. Â This is also an f8. the stopped downs f5.6 is much larger opening of the helicoids. Â It seems your Leica dealer is telling fibs as there is no change in the helicoids for version 1 up to and until the last production batch. Â Usual dealer wanting to sell at any rate. tritentrue Posted September 3, 2017 Share #38 Â Posted September 3, 2017 V. 1 modified to accept the 1.4X extender R has the rearmost element recessed further into the lens. Â At f/2.8 the aperture blades are rounded. Â At each half-stop thereafter through f/6.8, the aperture blades have to varying degrees some "ninja star" shape. Â At f/8 the blades take a shape similar to the above photos. Â I have seen no evidence of the aperture shape in any specular highlights rendered since the conversion. Â A further change made to my copy is that it has a steel grey aperture ring, possibly because parts were in short supply.
