jay968 Posted July 13, 2016 Share #1 Posted July 13, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I picked up an M262 as a backup for my M-P and was surprised to find that the much touted 'quieter' shutter of the 262 isn't really quieter at all. It's pretty much the same sound, maybe ever so SLIGHTLY quieter but to tout this as one of its selling features seems to be a stretch. It's ever so slightly quieter than my M6, I think a bit quieter than the M9 but only because of the lack of shutter cocking sound. Any comments from anyone with experience with both the 262 and 240 (M or M-P?
Advertisement Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Hi jay968, Take a look here M262 shutter doesn't seem much quieter to me at all. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
matlep Posted July 13, 2016 Share #2 Posted July 13, 2016 I agree. The difference is very subtle.
jaapv Posted July 13, 2016 Share #3 Posted July 13, 2016 Ah - but this is an Internet forum - even non-existent differences take on huge proportions
edwardkaraa Posted July 13, 2016 Share #4 Posted July 13, 2016 The M262 shutter always sounds like it's stuck on 1/15 even at high shutter speeds, so it's kind of slower. That is of course in S mode. In C mode, it sounds exactly like the M240.
Gregm61 Posted July 13, 2016 Share #5 Posted July 13, 2016 The bigger sell for me 4 months ago, is M240 image quality and more modern design compared to the M9 for almost $2,000 less. The difference has dropped to $1,200 with the M262 price increase and I see the M240 now selling for $6,600, but still a healthy difference. I would not even call it even substantially more quiet than what is now my backup M9 when using that body in the way you delay the shutter re-cocking until you remove your finger from the release, allowing one to lower the camera and shield the noise somewhat better. jim0266 Posted July 13, 2016 Share #6 Posted July 13, 2016 Hi Jay, when I was able to demo a 240 beside my 262 a few months back I didn't think there was a discernible difference between them in loudness. THey each had a unique sound to me. But since you have both of them, why not whip up a video for us comparing the two.
G3rald Posted July 13, 2016 Share #7 Posted July 13, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I cannot tell the difference in volume but the pitch is different. I actually like the m/p 240 lower pitch better.
ayewing Posted July 13, 2016 Share #8 Posted July 13, 2016 I have not handled an M262 yet but I have used the M8, M9 and M240 none of which have nearly as a nice shutter sound as the subtle click of my old M2 and when I had it my hearing was much better than it is now! Exodies Posted July 13, 2016 Share #9 Posted July 13, 2016 I wear ear plugs when taking photographs; stops all the pain from noisy shutters.
Jeff S Posted July 13, 2016 Share #10 Posted July 13, 2016 Hi Jay, when I was able to demo a 240 beside my 262 a few months back I didn't think there was a discernible difference between them in loudness. THey each had a unique sound to me. But since you have both of them, why not whip up a video for us comparing the two. Not the M240, but here's a video comparing the sounds of the M262, M-E and M2...
