Af mode advise

Recommended Posts

I used AFS mode, sometimes I don't get the focus on the subject where I intended to focus.

I too have confused AF-s with AF-c -- Single focus versus continual focus is very different than multi-point versus single point.

Personally, I never use AF-c since I shoot landscapes, portraits, street scenes and rarely moving objects.

I prefer single point focus and I am constantly moving the point around with the "joystick" -- or I just let it choose (street mode!)

If your using single point AF mode, you can touch the AF point on the LCD, for about 1-2 seconds and can then freely drag it anywhere on the screen.  Double tap the screen to move it back to the home/middle position.

The Dpad does the same thing, but often I find using the LCD faster because I can move diagonally instead of only up/down/left/right

Not sure what your subject is, but with humans and grid AF I find face detection works very well.

I, too, have recently found what a great feature the face detection AF mode is. It allows a much higher percentage of focussed shots of people, obviously, but it works great on non human faces too. I have several up close shots of dogs that I never would have gotten with a center focus. It instantly got the eyes perfectly focussed. I also recall an amazing shot on the Leica forum Germany where a guy remotely fired his Q using the app. It framed a squirrel who moved in towards the bait.

Candids: I also have discovered I can surreptitiously photograph people with the camera at my hip but basically pointed in the right direction towards my subject. Then, the Q gets the focus right and I crop as needed in LR for the typically skewed angles. You can rest your hand on the top of the camera very nonchalantly and press the silent shutter and no one is the wiser....
