otto.f Posted June 18, 2016 Share #21 Posted June 18, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can't really look at the image as such because I'm distracted by the green cast that is hanging as a curtain before it. The credibility of jaapv's colors in a windmill is much higher.

The credibility of jaapv's colors in a windmill is much higher. Thank you for bringing this up, it certainly is a valid concern. Looking at it again (on an iPhone screen mind you) I don't see a distracting green cast, and I also didn't see it on the screen of my MacBook Pro. Color is a hard thing to get right though, especially when you change temperature to create a certain mood. Also, it will look different for everyone as most displays are not (properly) calibrated. I will look at it again once I have access to a calibrated monitor. :-) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
otto.f Posted June 18, 2016 Share #23 Posted June 18, 2016 I see it from my iPad Pro, I do my own photo's with that too, and see no irregularities. I see green dust on the mills, I take it that this is ground grain, which should be white or ecrue colored, no?

Iduna Posted June 18, 2016 Share #25 Posted June 18, 2016 Thank you for your thoughts. There is no question that the focus of the image is the man. He stands out because of color, contrast, texture, while the other parts of the frame have more or less the same color palette and lower contrast. My feeling is that the rotating wheel in the top left should be quite big and prominent to counter balance the more contrasty bottom right part (which contains the subject). Otherwise this image would feel unbalanced. I don't quite get your reasoning for a B&W version. The cool tones in this image are deliberate; I wanted to give a feeling of technicality. A warm tone would be suggesting something more open or inviting which does not fit the idea I intended. I also certainly wouldn't like to make the stone pattern in the background more prominent as it is of very minor importance to the story. :-) I think it is always up to the photographer bringing out all those things he wants and lastly it is a personal decision. You mentioned the blue tinge as a synonym for a more technical aspect and atmosphere, then let it be like that. A subject gets as many interpretations as there are photographers. That is the best, because you get so many different stories then. Many thanks for letting us discuss a few of those aspects and keep going!

Michael Hiles Posted August 2, 2016 Share #28 Posted August 2, 2016 I like the picture. The gear at the top right is OofF enough that is has to be looked at carefully to be recognized. But that does not detract, it just makes you think and work a little (no bad thing). If you intended to make the picture in colour, that is what it is. Debating about B&W is ridiculous - If you want to make pictures in B&W, do so when you pick up the camera. Decide what you intend, then do it. HAve a plan, then follow through. You will never improve things by equivocating later. Someone once said "if you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there". No road will get you there, more likely.
