Important information about the goodwill arrangement for Leica S-Lenses

In rare cases, a defect may appear in the autofocus drive unit of Leica S-Lenses. Under certain unfavourable conditions, this may lead to a complete loss of the autofocus function.

For products affected by this problem, Leica Camera AG offers a free replacement of the autofocus drive unit within the terms of a goodwill arrangement. This goodwill arrangement is independent of the age of the lens. Should this defect occur in one of your S lenses, we recommend that you to send it directly to Leica Customer Care or the authorised Customer Care department of your country’s Leica distributor.

As a premium manufacturer, we consider it our obligation to provide only technically faultless products. We therefore particularly regret that the functions of one of your S lenses could be impaired in any way. We hope that the goodwill arrangement mentioned above will allow us to remedy the problem as soon as possible and rebuild and maintain the trust you have always placed in our brand.

They should replace them with modified units & offering a No Charge overnight exchange service using Fedex or another multi national courier company.. Leica really need to Step Up considering the cost of the lenses..

I was aware of this when I suggested that the additional Protection Plan was still worth considering since it provides for loaners.  A good negotiator might even get the plan included at purchase.   <_<

Jeff I am going to ask, but my gut feeling is that the Leica dealer in Scotland isn't going to be able to give it to me.

He has the platinum plans for sale on his web site, so I can see me getting anything for free.

It has been suggested that S007 has a faster AF algorithm that may put more stress on non modified S lenses which could accelerate their rate of failure.

Might be a good thing if you could clear all old lenses at an early point of ownership.

The problem is Leica isn't going to fix something that's not broken, so its just a waiting game :(

Platinum plan came with the S2-P.....the Leica Protection Plan comes with the S006/007 (3 years with 006 and 1yr, I think, with the 007).  Additional years can be purchased....but requires some strong negotiating as well as specific dealer and buyer circumstances for any courtesies beyond that.  New lenses carry one year warranty, and an additional year can be purchased....or negotiated.  Worked for me, but I didn't keep the system.

I will see what Leica in Scotland says, but my gut feeling is its going to be a finical transaction and if thats the case I will not take it, figuring on if its going to break it will break in the first year........

The key is to discuss loaner availability from the dealer in the event of any issue.  That's the main reason for the Protection Plan as opposed to the standard warranty.  Better dealers with good inventory, however, may offer courtesy loaner even in the absence of formal coverage.  The AF motors on the lenses will always be covered whether in or out of warranty....it's getting a quick replacement that's the issue here.  Same with the camera.

My experience with this is this; I am buying the Leica S007 from the Leica dealer in Scotland, but I live in Malaysia. If I go to the Leica store in Malaysia with a problem with my camera, they will tell me to go to the Leica store in Scotland (My mates store in KL has been shut down now for about 6 months due to lack of supplies and sales) So basically I am in stook.

I am not bothered about the lenses, my 70mm has got the new motor and if my other lenses crap out I will ask the remaining Leica store in KL to send my lens to Singapore to get fixed.............. Apparently they can fix the lenses in Singapore now so the turn around shouldn't be to long !!

Interesting information about Singapore. I googled and see three Leica Stores there. What is the point of contact to repair the lens in Singapore? My 24mm is in Thailand, close to Singapore. Thanks.
