marknorton Posted June 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 7, 2007 A USB port provides 5v at a maximum current of 500mA. Although the M8 battery has a maximum output voltage of 4.2v, the charger requires an operating voltage of more than this, typically 12v which is provided by connecting it to a car connector or the inbuilt switched mode power supply. The battery is also charged at about 0.75A which will overload a USB port and, depending on what it's connected to, cause the port to shut down. The latest version of my Travel Charger has a built in USB port so that I can charge a phone or an iPod from the Travel Charger, at the same time as the M8 battery is being charged. Mark, Presumably when an M8's battery is nearly flat the in-rush current would be considerably higher than 0.75 Amps - owing to the battery's low internal impedance, which could damage the M8 because, afaik, USBs don't contain surge-current protection devices do they? wparsonsgisnet Posted June 7, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 7, 2007 I don't mind having to charge the battery out of the camera but I sure would like the option to power the camera from the usb connector. It would be terrific to do a long studio shoot without a battery change (of fear of the sleep syndrome).
