I just got an IMAC and can't save to an external hard drive using PSCS3. I get a message saying that the file cannot be found. Ironically it can open a file from my external hard drive but won't save to it. What's wrong? Help!!!!!!! I thought MACS were the next best thing sinced sliced bread? I never had this issue with my PC.

Thanks,

Wilfredo

Has the external drive been formated in NTFS format? If so a Mac can read from it but can't write to it.

If the drive is in Fat 32 format there isn't a problem.

It's a pain in the rear, and one I'd like to be solved.

There is a solution fot the NTFS problem, but a bit technical one:

macfuse - Google Code

I guess it's not the solution for Wilfredo, except if he knows some mac geek ;)

Best,

Bernd

Just like sliced bread, however, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS formatted partitions. This is mainly due to the fact that Microsoft never released a file system specification for it. As I wrote in my previous post, there is an open source solution available, but probably not for the faint-hearded. I guess the best thing you can do right now is to copy everything from that external disk to your new iMac (your PC's hard disk is full, if I remeber correctly ;) ) and then format you external drive with the FAT32 file system which both, PC and Mac, can read. You can format the drive either by using Mac OS X's Drive Utility or Window's formatting tools.

Well... you would have if you ever tried to attach a Mac formatted drive to it - it couldn't even read it

Best,

Bernd

I thought my troubles would be over once I got the MAC. If I save something to one of those memory sticks on the MAC, will the PC open it?

Thanks,

Wilfredo,

You move fast - but you've already received good advice on getting 'all the ducks in a row' so I won't complicate things with alternate routes.

I am sure that once you have the external drive talking to the iMac, you'll be whizzing along.

Incidentally, once you are past the initial hump you should be all set for a long time. I run a four year old IMac and a seven year old PowerBook and run both Lightroom and Photoshop fine. Although no doubt things would run more quickly on the latest gear and I may have to do something about that soon.......

But anyway, good luck with the new setup

You'll have absolutely no problem reading to or from memory cards or memory sticks.

Macs use HFS format - PCs use NTFS.

You may want to, as recommended earlier, copy all the files to a folder on the iMac, format the external drive in HFS using Disk Utility, and then move the files back to the external.

If you still want to hold on to your old Dell, you may want to look into some of the software mentioned before or pickup a Networkable Hard Drive that connects via Ethernet to your local network so both the Mac and PC can see (and write to) it.

Thanks for the tips. Now, my old PC with PSCS when it saves a Leica Tiff file, saves it as something it can't later open. When it rains it pours.... Sometimes it works, now, most of the time it's not working.

Cheers,
