Jenningsmca Posted June 8, 2016 Share #1 Posted June 8, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been looking at R lenses to use on my SL. There seems to be three types and really not sure which ones will work best. One Cam R Two Cam R Three Cam R ROM which version works best on the SL and Why? Is there one or two versions to absolutely stay away from? A little info before Inspend any money on there lenses. Thx
Advertisement Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Hi Jenningsmca, Take a look here Leica R lens on SL. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ferdinand Posted June 8, 2016 Share #2 Posted June 8, 2016 All of them will work proper. With the ROM-Version you'll get the lens data in the EXIF automatically with the new Leica Adapter R-SL and in addition the lens profile. That means the camera can identify the R lens. And with all others you can select the lens in the camera menu to get the lens data for the EXIF
ramarren Posted June 8, 2016 Share #3 Posted June 8, 2016 Yes, the lenses' R mount version is of no consequence with the two-adapter stack (M Adapter T + R Adapter M) most are currently using, and ROM lenses should provide another level of automation when the R Adapter SL is released. Otherwise, pick R lenses based upon which version has the performance and the features (clip-on hood vs slide-out hood, etc) that you want. Most of my R lenses are three-cam models, my preference for best compatibility in use with both Leicaflex SL and R8 bodies.
ski542002 Posted June 11, 2016 Share #4 Posted June 11, 2016 I just took delivery of my SL a few days ago; stellar camera! Use the 180 3.4 APO R on the SL with the 2-adapter stack and it works fantastic. Was a frustrating combo using my now-sold M240 and the hot-shoe EVF. Great on the SL. Thx Any chance someone could provide a brief description of the differences between these lenses pls. For example, does cam refer to an actual cam, as in a linkage into rangefinder focussing? Thanks. ramarren Posted June 13, 2016 Share #6 Posted June 13, 2016 They're all forms of mechanical/electronic communications for the R-system bodies: One cam is the earliest type of R lens, designed to be used with the original Leicaflex. Two cam adds a second cam for informing the body with respect to maximum and set apertures, for TTL metering with the Leicaflex SL. Three cam adds a third cam for the different metering interface hardware in the R series bodies. R-only have only the R cam. ROM connects to R8 and R9 bodies with electronic lens communications. The SL needs none of these things with the current two-adapter stack. When the R Adapter SL comes out, it will likely use information transferred via the ROM interface; possibly others. Many thanks ramerren. I am pretty much going to wait until later this year before buying any adapter - need to get to know my 24-90!

ramarren Posted June 15, 2016 Share #9 Posted June 15, 2016 Yes, that's an excellent page on R lenses. I'd forgotten where I located the information I posted above. Most of my R lenses are three-cam models in order to be the most compatible with Leica R and Leicaflex SL bodies.
