I don't know if the day has passed where the Leica travelling reps would have "favourite" dealers who were prepared to carry stock of slower moving items like new film M bodies. Those dealers always got "first dibs" on new items to the extent that some could sell to people walking in off the street, while other people who had waited months with that item on order at a different, less favoured dealer, were still without. I am not sure Leica Mayfair even has travelling reps like Milton Keynes used to have.

My purchase is through Leica Store directly and not dealers,...that is what pisses me off!

The Leica Store might well have the longest queue of all and could also be in the unenviable position of trying to keep their dealers happy as well. It could be a bit like children sharing candies "one for you, two for me"

In Singapore, there are a couple of Leica Grey Market Importers fighting for market share among Leica Stores & local dealers. It was my deliberate decision to purchase from Leica Store paying more thinking I get better service, less waiting time and better after sales support. After this round of my experience being deprived of my que and forced to accept the following shipment ( the timing Leica store informed me on the arrival of my lens falls into the timing of next shipment,...customers are no dumb fools), I will forego buying from Leica store directly for future purchases. Rather better off enjoying better discounts on pricing buying from grey market importers since the wait time and service provided is no different. I am now convinenced that leica good purchased directly off Leica store will not receive better after sales service support.

Got mine from the Leica Boutique at Samy's on Fairfax in LA last week. Was on the list here, and at the Leica Store in LA for several weeks. After I got mine, and cancelled I was only 6th on the list at Leica even after all this time.

I think it is all about communication and expectation. I would not be pissed if I were told to wait for six weeks in the beginning and the delivery came in six weeks or less. As a customer, we have kept our side of the agreement and not a moving target like Leica.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, down here at the bottom of the world, one 90-280 is coming in 4-5 weeks and it could be September before there is another one.

I placed my order yesterday, for delivery later in the year (when I will have put aside the requisite pennies).

If it's the end of the year or early next, I don't particularly mind.  It will come when it comes, that's the Leica world we live in.

Cheers

John

Just got mine two hours ago. Leica has increased the price since preordering (end of 2015) by more than 10 percent - booh Leica !

But the dealer (FotoPro GANZ in Zürich) kept his promise and gave it for the preorder price !! That's really great! That makes loyal customers !

They did something similar with the 35mm for the Leica T, from $1,950 during pre-order to $2,395 afterwards, almost a 23% increase.  Not a very ethical business practice IMHO...

Why?

They also reduce prices towards the end of a product run.

As a customer I quite frankly don't appreciate it if a company increases the price with 23% without giving any explanation to its customers whatsoever...

It feels like jacking up the price simply because they can which obviously is their good right but it is also my good right as a customer to frown upon that...

I BTW passionately dislike the whole Leica pre-order process with its dealer favoritism and waiting lists that are already filled before they become available online...  I in most cases prefer not to participate in that and buy the goods when they are available in the stores 6 months later...

Well, prices go up, prices go down ...

Leica's supply system has always been plagued with favouritism, from what I can tell. Again, not uncommon for in demand goods - Ferrari similarly is selective about who gets its top cars (a bit extreme, I know). My dealer also held to the price I ordered at.

The dealer held to the price I ordered at, but Leica at the same time did not hold to the price the dealer ordered at. So I am happy despite the late delivery, but only thanks to this dealer and despite Leicas price increase that would normally have caught me on the false foot. (order placed, no alternative)

New orders and deliveries are another story.

I remember that some comments were made that the SL 90-280 was relatively "low" priced compared to earlier R lenses and to the M lenses in general. Yes, maybe, if the price is not increased before delivery.

How are your expectations if you order a car, that usually also needs several months until delivery ?

I think the expectations are probably ambivalent: We expect to pay "contract price" at most. Contract price if prices have been increased in meantime. New better deal if prices have gone down in meantime (currency fluctuations etc.).   Agree ?

Anyway Leica prices are difficult to explain or compare. The 35mm AA was about 4000 DM/2000 euro when bought in the beginning nineties (after 2 years of "student jobs", it was then an enormous sum). Now it is almost as expensive as a new noctilux, like a small car. The Apo 2.8/280 a few years later cost a real fortune (2.5x as much) and can now be had for 2000 dollar or little more.
