I haven't even had the thing for a week and already the lens lust is beginning. I've tried hiding my credit cards but I keep finding them. They just keep screaming at me "Buy me, buy me!!!!!". But which of these little darlings do I make happy by buying (as you can see, it will be a purely selfless act).

I've even convinced myself that I'm poor by wearing worn out clothes and eating KD but the fashion sense and diet really haven't changed that much.

I definitely want the CV 15/4.5 in black but where do I get one from, it seems they're back ordered everywhere. If anybody knows of anywhere let me know, new or used, I don't mind.

I have a 28/2.8 Elmarit.

The only other one is a 90 or 75, I read a thread on portraits and the pros and cons of each but what about for on the street and/or indoors. I'm tempted to buy a 90mm but that seems to be a long way from a 28mm.

Or maybe a 50mm?

I think I just worked out what the circle of confusion is. Now who on earth is Scheimpflug?

First things first: which country are you in?

Secondly, what kinds of photos do you enjoy? There are lots of wonderful lenses, but without knowing what you enjoy, or might want to use it for, there is just no telling which one is the right one for you. If all you have is a 28/2.8 right now (Asph?), then perhaps a logical next step is a 50 Summicron, or if you can spring for it, a 50 Lux Asph. Those two combined with the CV15 would cover almost every situation except macro and telephoto.

HI There

I'm not sure where you are either.

You could try:

http://www.robertwhite.co.uk

they're lovely, and they seem to be the main source of voigtlander lenses in the UK.

As for your next lens, I'm not going to be as circumspect as Carsten - unless you have real need for low light get yourself a 75 summicron, because:

1. it's fabulously sharp

2. it's great for portraits

3. bar the macro elmar it's the best for close detail

4. I love it (well, that isn't a reason for you go get one!)

If you do want low light, then a 50mm 1.4 asph might be a better idea. There are lots of 50 f2 'crons going on ebay in the UK very cheaply.

Does this help? probably not.

Anyway, enjoy your M8 whilst bankruptcy is still a distant worry!

this from Wikpedia: "The Scheimpflug principle is a geometric rule that describes the orientation of the plane of focus of an optical system (such as a camera) when the lens plane is not parallel to the image plane. It is commonly applied to the use of camera movements on a view camera. The principle is named after Austrian army Captain Theodor Scheimpflug, who used it in devising a systematic method and apparatus for correcting perspective distortion in aerial photographs."

so, anyhoo, the 15 4.5 is a fine choice. find one here: http://www.cameraquest.com/voigtlen.htm . senior gandy is a saint.

my personal testimonial is that an CV lens is supurb.

I like the 75 cron too and own one.

The 75 (and longer) are a bit twitchy to focus full open.

My next object of lust is the 50 lux.

I have (now)

24 elmarit

35 cron

75 cron

I lust over an additional stop on the 35 (maybe) or the 50 lux

I think that the 57 is just the ticket for portraits.

Gareth, while your making lust lists, don't forget the 1.25 magnifier. When you at the 75/90 end, it makes a lot of difference. I suspect most of us leave it on all the time, even with short lenses. I do.

Congratulations. BTW, it's hasn't really started until you have your harddisk farm, second printer, offsiet backup, multiple raw processors, and are evaluating 7 kinds of archival paper for both color and b/w printing.

Welcome to the club. Ain't it great/

Thanks for the heads up guy, I was looking for a black one. I'll try dropping Cameraquest a note but it seems the production backlog will have me somewhere near the back of the line.

Still, if anybody gets a lead on a black one then please let me know.

What do I shoot? I have 4 kids, they tend to get in the way of most of my best shots :) Other than that, I love landscapes as they don't answer back like the kids and I have travelled a bit over the last few years and been restricted to city shooting and that, I think, will be the real forte of the M8.

I rarely shoot indoors, mostly because I detest flash but the M8 seems to offer more flexibility there, even a relatively slow lens like a 75/2.5 seems to offer more potential than, say, a Canon f1.4. Why is that?

That should give you an idea of what I'm looking at. Interesting that a few of you mentioned a 50mm as well.

Bill, thanks for nothing, now I have to look at the magnifier, ya da ya da. In the meanwhile I'm going to find out about getting you banned from the forum, so even though our time together was brief, it was a pleasure knowing you..............

I did quite a bit of 'personal' testing with and without the magnifier. I found that with some lenses (even the 135!) I was actually getting better results without the magnifier. I tried to figure out why. I think it's because the magnifier actually reduces the light and contrast in the viewfinder, and as such my focusing was not as good with it that without it. After my 1.25x fell apart while on vacation I had little choice about using it, and TBH I really didn't miss it....

It's interesting to me that the 50/2 was the first M lens I bought (via e-bay) and is actually my very least used lens. There is something about that focal range that does nothing for me!

My most used lens by far is the 28/2.8. After that, the CV15, and then perhaps the 75/2 ASPH and 135 APO. The 35/2 gets used now and then, but it's too tight most of the time. The 50.... hmmmm 1 in 500 shots maybe, just slightly behind the 90/2 !

I think I just worked out what the circle of confusion is. Now who on earth is Scheimpflug?

The Scheimpflug principle is really only relevant to shooting with a view camera, where the lens plane and/or focal plane can be tilted relative to one another.

I think my humour got lost. I was talking about my circle of confusion on lens selection. The only reason I mentioned Scheimpflug was because he has a really cool name :)

Gareth, it you have to force the cards out of hibernation, let it be for a classic: the 50 lux. I've had 'em all, love nearly all of them (especially the CV15 with a John Milich adaptor) but the Daddy of all lenses is the 50 lux. Trust me.

And Wormtongue whispers "Noctilux... NOCTILUX!"

You KNOW you want to. f/1. All the light you will ever need.

Kinda wish I still had it. M8 will be grand in low light... But only for those that take low light shooting "seriously."

Heeeheeeheeeheeeheee!

for 5 and a half grand I'd build a church to it, not stick it on the front of a camera.

Symptoms are clear, you got the "lens lust". Cures are not known to exist and eventually the lust will prevail over any feelings of guilt, So do not even try to fight it.

Not to forget between the CV 15 and Elmarit 28, a 21 or 24mm lens would be nice..........

Expectable. I'll have to get some smart 13-year-old to help me hack in after I'm banned.

Anyway, Gareth, thanks for spurning the silver 15 -- I bot it as soon as you said you didn't want it [read: waited after guy's post to see what you were going to do].

So, you got even; you spent my money.

Regards to all,

I personally love the look of chrome lenses, but only those with a classical form. The CV15 and Dual-Range Summicron are two lenses I love the look of. The chrome 50 Lux Asph leaves me cold, on the other hand, as does the 90 Apo Cron. Something about modern design and chrome finish doesn't work for me. I would love to trade my 35 Cron Asph for a chrome version.
