lemalk Posted June 6, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted June 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All - I just received my D3 and it's really pretty great - one of the things that had me concerned was that as I was holding it in my hand, I could hear some audible noise coming out of the body - it was a low hum. At first I thought the lens was autofocusing since it did sound like a small motor humming. I put the lens cap back on and still heard the noise - is this something common or is there actual reason for concern?
Advertisement Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Hi lemalk, Take a look here Digilux 3 - Actual Noise?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dist Posted June 6, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted June 6, 2007 Might be the OIS actuators (anti shake system in kit lens). You can turn off OIS (there's a switch on the lens) so you can verify if the sound goes away with OIS off. HTH. Cheers
dugby Posted June 6, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted June 6, 2007 In addition to Dieter's response. Â OIS Mode-1 has the motors running continuously whilst the camera is switched on. This, I recall is the camera's default setting. Â OIS Mode-2 only switches the motors on durring the image capture. Â OIS Mode-3 does not apply to a D3...yet,.. only L1 owners have this feature. graeme_clarke Posted June 6, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted June 6, 2007 Hello Lemalk - I took delivery of mine last Friday, and noticed the motor in the lens whirring all the time, whether or not image stabilisation is switched on or off. I'll have to get it out and try OS2 because surely with the motor running continually it will shorten battery life! By the way, I'm delighted with the pics - even though they're just trial shots. Â best wishes - Graeme
lemalk Posted June 6, 2007 Author Share #5 Â Posted June 6, 2007 Thanks for the quick responses dist and dugby - I, much like Graeme, have the motors constantly running. I'll try OS 2 as well. Â So far, I love the camera and it definitely feels just right... and the image quality is stellar.
S. Wong Posted June 7, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted June 7, 2007 I played w/ an L1 @ bestbuy, and the viewfinder seemed fine... untill I picked up my R4 w/ 50/1.4, which is a lot bigger, but the brightest one was the the D40x next to the L1. Â what is your impression? also, what do you think the 14-50 lens is worth? I was thinking about getting the L1 & selling the lens, and just using an adapter for my R lenses -Steven
Davwat Posted June 30, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted June 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I queried this quiet hum with Leica U.K.that is always running on the D3 and Leica said it was the noise of the processor and nothing to do with the len stabilisation motors. amcmaster Posted June 30, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted June 30, 2007 An all-but imperceptible hum might come from the processor, though I am probably too deaf to catch it! however the low level gentle grumbling comes from the OIS in mode 1. Mode 2 leaves it silent since you only get a very fast tweak at exposure time. OIS Mode 3 IS available on the D3 now. Just update the firmware to Version 2.
