Hi Jaap,

Nice shots! More due to the photographer than the camera i think, so compliments to you instead of the M8 being better than the Canon. :)

Hans

Thanks Hans :) Not better, but better for the job - for me.

these photographs are an inspiration, as are your comments

Dear Jaap

i think you have Viso as well.

Do you find the RF or screen SLR focusing easier in these situations (bird fligt)

regards

I picked up a 560 Telyt for a bargain price from KEH and used it for birds in flight with the Viso

the Viso has a crop (which Jaap kindly gave the details in another post), so there is a greater view than the area captured, which is a great advantage for this kind of photography as Jaap pointed out

manual focus is not all that difficult once you get the hang of it and I got many sharply focused shots ...unfortunately I needed to dial in more negative compensation and lost many otherwise fine captures to overexposure from my first birding outing ...white birds against the sky/foliage need a good deal of negative compensation ...sadly I was so intent on maintaining my balance & getting the shots that I did not chimp sufficiently to pick up this problem until I got home ...the M8's LCD in very bright light is not all that useful

once you get the exposure down (which I didn't in my first outing) putting the Viso in the "yellow dot" mode allows for rapid shutter release with very little if any shutter lag

I need to find time to get back to some birds with this combination

I also need to find an ir/cut and polarizer for this lens, but that is an altogether other problem & one that may not be so easy to accomplish:mad:

One thing I learned with Viso is the need for 'slow shutter' your exposure probelems may be due to the sensors not having enough time to sense the light (or the mirror is not quick enough in getting out of the way, an adjustment issue.

I don't know yet, Victor. It surely depends on the distance and size of the bird. For this situation I feel the RF focussing was better. I have the plan to take the M8s, Visoflex with Brightscreen, Noflexar 400 follow-focus, the 280 and 135 (and some short stuff) on an extended Africa trip in October. I will be in Kafue and Busanga Plains and maybe the Benguerra Swamps in Zambia for a couple of weeks then and go back to my "roots" - I took a similar set on my M3 in the late seventies to the Masai Mara in Kenia and was very pleased with the result at that time, that being my first go at real wildlife photograpy. Expect me to bore you all to tears with my posts on the subject in November and December.

try as i might, i fail to see the connection here.

while i might agree on point #1 ("I could see the birds fly into the frame, he could not..."), i must disagree with point #2.

The big problem with DSLRs is that you don't see the bird until it comes in to the frame (almost too late). This makes you late taking off with your panning movement, so it's possible that you don't pan fast enough to keep up with it. So, you end up with only part of the bird in the frame, and also effects the AF system too!

Jaap i never want to see you with a AF lens in your hands , you simply will never need one. Now that is a shot

I always do a test shot using the black dot mode in A priority & then set the speed manually using yellow dot mode to release the shutter ...with the Viso III I have found this the best way for action photography

sadly I was too caught up in the thrill of capturing the birds to pay heed to my LCD ...the foliage was perfectly exposed, but the white birds blown, mostly

that said, I had some that came out well & I believe I have learned from this experience, particularly as the M8 does so well with recovering shadows

Jaap,

Had a nice holliday? I do remember a thread about diving and M 8 and something with dolphins...How about those pictures, new thread?? And did you really try a M8 in a plastic bag?

As a matter of fact I didn't, Harald. I did modify my plan to taking the Digilux2 underwater however, as that seemed to be a more practical tool. Ewa Marine has an incredible backlog in production, so I was not able to get the plastic bag in time. My dealer kindly sold me a Casio EXLIM with underwater housing at cost as a replacement, and I did not even get around to downloading the SD card yet....:o
