Itsalwaysbeets Posted May 5, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently received an M2, when I first recived the camera it would not let the film advance lever move unless I rotated the shutter speed dial all the way one way and then back the other way, somewhere along the rotation there would be an audible click and following that I was capable of advancing the film. After the first roll of film, this was no longer a problem. Then around my fifth roll, it would require me to rotate the knob a few times until it clicked, until I got to about photo 34 when it would not no mater how many times I rotated the shutter speed dial, at which point I rewound the film and set the camera aside. Now I am woundering where I should take it and what cost I should expect where I take it. I live in Southern California and I know that there is a Leica store just over in LA, what would the cost be there, and would it be worth it? Or would I be better off taking it to some where like Samy's Camera, where I buy most of my photographic supplies? Or can I trust my local camera store that only really sells HP5 and Kodak Gold (Clearly not very film oriented)? Or is there another place that I do not know of? And lastly how much should I expect to pay at these places, I am completely new to the Leica System and have never really had any work done on one of my cameras. On a side note, when I recived the camera, it came with a light meter, in which the selenium no longer reacts so I first read a quick tutorial online about disassembling a Ziess Ikon's light meter and riffing the selenium up with steel wool, then I put the light meter back together and it still didn't work. So I am wondering if I can buy a new selenium strip or if most repair shops can do this and how much it costs? Thank you so much!

madNbad Posted May 5, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 5, 2016 First, welcome to the forum! In the Collector and Historica thread there is a list of recommended repair specialist, often with accompanying comments on both the quality of their work and turn around time. There is a light meter specialist located in Los Angeles who works on selenium meters, look for Quality Light Meter and he may be able to help. Good luck with your search and read through the forum which should help answer your questions.

earleygallery Posted May 5, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 5, 2016 My advice, don't send your M2 to Leica - use one of the independent repairers nearer to you (see thread as mentioned above). Apart from anything else, when I asked Leica for a quote for a CLA on my M2 they wanted about 4 X what a local repair guy charged. I'd just bin the meter. Buy a digital meter which will be more accurate, especially in lower light.
