Fox Hunting

Well, Soho was once a hunting ground for the Palace of Westminster, the name "Soho" being what the hunters would holler as they rode forth.

The last fox to be driven out of Soho was indeed an Intrepid Fox. This place has been bought up by property developers and will become 'luxury flats' - quite who'd want to live in such a noisy area though, bearing in mind the likely asking prices is another thing.

The Intrepid Fox had been a public house since 1784, named after the first Foreign Secretary of Britain, and in more recent times has been know as a Rockers and Goth pub. Famous rockers like Mick Jagger and Malcolm McLaren used to drink there. It was always a friendly pub - on my last visit, after a day at the office, I was politely told by the barmaid that she couldn't serve me - unless I removed my tie.

I feel so sad when I walk past the pub now, it was part of the character of Soho and part of the history of London, and part of 'my' London.

Foxes being the cunning creatures they are, there is a 'new' Intrepid Fox near Centre Point off New Oxford Street, but its never going to be quite the same. I may have posted a photo of the pub a while back just after it had closed, but feel its worth another look.

Both photos M2 & 35 Skopar.
